NFL: two overtime rules for 2010
Edited on Tue May-25-10 08:46 PM by Auggie
espn.com / May 25th, 2010

IRVING, Texas -- The NFL isn't ready to expand the new overtime rule to the regular season. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the issue was tabled during owners meetings in the Dallas area. He said the league wants to continue talking to players.

In the regular season, though, the old first-team-to-score-wins rule will be in effect. "I think the membership felt and the competition committee felt we had addressed the issue we wanted this offseason with respect to the postseason," Goodell said. "We want to continue to talk to our players."

Owners voted in March to change the sudden-death rule for the playoffs. If the team that loses the coin flip immediately gives up a field goal, that team will get a chance to score either to tie or win. But there wasn't enough support for the proposal to warrant a vote, sources told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Let me understand this... we have TWO overtime rules in effect now. One for regular season. One for the playoffs.

First a New Jersey Super Bowl. Now this. How fucked-up can the NFL get?

You mean, as in I copied the dispatch city exactly from the original post?

Dude -- chill. Your Orioles beat Oakland 5-1. You should be happy.

5. I'm not big on the new rule
But, I don't see any problem with 2 different rules for overtime

The NHL has one OT rule for regular and one for the Post Season

9. Yes there has.
It's like the people in here have their head up their ass.

Or up someone else's ass.

Or surgically connected to someone else's ass.

8. NHL has two OT rules
one for the regular season, one for the playoffs. Not saying it's the right way to go, but the NFL is not alone..

13. It Should Be: First Team That Scores A TD, Wins in OT
It's simple. It's quick. It saves wear and tear on the players. And, it's fair. If your defense cannot stop the other team from scoring a TD, then you deserve to lose. Also, it prevents games from being won by a good long distance kicker.

Finally, it pays homage to the first ever OT game which was won on a TD when they could have won with a FG.
