Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland apologizes for asking Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute
Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland apologized to Cowboys WR Dez Bryant on Tuesday for asking an inappropriate question of him during a pre-draft interview.

Ireland confirmed a Yahoo Sports report that he had asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. Bryant, who came from a troubled home and whose mother spent time in prison while he was a boy, calmly told Ireland that his mother was not a prostitute.

But inside, Bryant seethed. "I got mad – really mad," he told Yahoo, "but I didn't show it."

On Tuesday, Ireland called Bryant to apologize after Yahoo's Michael Silver blasted what he called the unacceptable arrogance of the Dolphins GM.

1. Silver is a fantastic writer
He absolutely ripped into Ireland, the Dolphins, and NFL front office asshole culture in general.

2. Klassy
Dez Bryant should have asked if Ireland had a legitimate father. Or words to that effect.

4. Does he ask all his potential recruits if their mothers are prostitutes?
I'm not sure if this situation is covered by the EEOC regulations on what you can ask a prospective employee. I still find it hard to believe that this jerk would think, "Is your mother a prostitute?" relevant to the employment position.

I don't see how this question pertains to a potential employee.

Is there a list the Dolphins go down and check off?

"Was your momma a whore?"

"Did your momma sell drugs?"

"Does your momma owe any outstanding fees to the local library?"

6. It was actually Jeff Ireland's evil twin brother Geoff Ireland who asked that.
The real Jeff Ireland has amnesia after being struck by lightning and is lost in South America looking for the Hottentot Emerald.

Oh wait, is this about sports? Because for a second there I thought it was a motherfucking soap opera.

7. And if his mother was, what damned difference would there be between
she and Wall Street brokers? She's out there making a living the best she knows how, they're out there stealing their living. I have far more respect for his mother if indeed, she was a pros..

8. If a prospective employer ever asked that question of me during an interview
the headlines the next day would be:

"GM Of Professional Football Team Has Size Twelve And A Half Shoe Successfully Removed From Three Feet Up His Ass During Emergency Surgery."

10. The proper response for Mr. Bryant
"No, my mother was not and is not a prostitute. But we should set a date to get together again some time. You should bring your mom and dad with you. As a licensed minister, I could marry them." Smile, shake his hand, exit room.

13. The PROPER Response To That Question
Ireland: "Is your Momma a prostitute?"

Dez: "Why? You ain't getting any at home?"

THAT'S how you answer THAT question. And when Ireland stuttered in response, Dez shoulda cut him off & said: "Well, you're in luck. She offers a discount to ignorant assholes."

Woulda been classic.

14. Kind of thinking that Ireland should be fired
Any other exec asking that question in any other line of work would be fired, or at least should be. I must say that I admire Bryant's restraint in not belting Ireland.

15. It was a classically insincere apology
That's my take, based on psychology books I've read. Notice Ireland is preoccupied with himself in the first two sentences, to the point he applauds himself for asking "in-depth" questions. There's nothing at all in those sentences about Dez or his mother. Then Ireland never publicly apologizes. He says he apologized to Dez. The wording in the sentences about himself is much stronger than in the sentences regarding the apology. Ireland won't even admit to bad judgment. He calls it poor judgment.
