the Marquette.....Gold?
Trustees decide to drop Golden Eagles moniker, not reinstate Warriors
By DON WALKER

The Marquette University Board of Trustees today decided to drop the Golden Eagles nickname in favor of a new one.

Beginning in July, the school's athletic teams will be known as ... the Marquette Gold.

The board decided to pass on going back to the "Warriors" nickname, the moniker that so many alumni had embraced for decades.

The highly anticipated announcement came from university president Robert A. Wild at a news conference at the Alumni Memorial Union.

"We live in a different era," Wild said in regard to the debate over whether to reinstate the Warriors nickname.

1. Ack.
I'll never forget rooting for Marquette in the NCAA finals as a kid. That's one of my great sporting memories, and this, well this, just seems odd.

2. Really, what exactly was so bad about "Warriors"?
It seems pretty ethnicity-neutral to me. I don't understand the reasoning for the change in the first place.

3. Agreed
Warriors was not offensive, nor was the next nickname of Golden Eagles. The Marquette 'Gold' are now up there with the other dumbass names like Stanford 'Cardinal' (wouldn't be bad if it was the bird, but no, it's the color), and the Syracuse 'Orange' (what was the problem with Orangemen anyway?).

6. They're not the Orangemen anymore?
LOL. Well, read up on the Battle of the Boyne and you might see why some object to that name.

7. Nope, just changed it last year
I'm Catholic, so I'm not really a fan of the name 'Orangemen'to say the least. However, it is still pretty idiotic to have a color as the school name/mascot.

8. Oh, I agree with THAT. I don't like any of those one word names.
The Heat and the Magic come to mind. Same with almost every WNBA name. Stupid stupid.

5. Nothing, nor was there anything wrong with the proposed new Warriors
They were deciding between Golden Eagles and Warriors, and instead decided to go with the asinine 'Gold'. The Warriors would not have used American Indian imagery either, like they had in the past, but were instead going to be culture neutral. Even Golden Eagles would have been a far better name than 'Gold'. I really want to see what idiotic mascot they will come up with now. Stanford still takes the prize, as they are named after a color and have a tree as a mascot.

9. my high school went through this
with the board of trustees trying to change the mascot. So they let the students vote. and stupidly had a write in line. after a short and brutal underground campaign, the overwhelming winner was "Fightin' Injuns" Funny, we never heard much about the mascot ever again.
