Phillip Buchanon signs with Washington Redskins
Cornerback Phillip Buchanon signed a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins on Monday.

The deal is worth $1.5 million, with $750,000 in incentives, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Buchanon has started 40 games in the past three seasons for Tampa Bay and Detroit. He was released by the Lions on March 4.

"We are very excited to add a veteran corner, such as Phillip, to our defensive backfield," said Mike Shanahan in a team statement Monday. "He has had a lot of success in this league and brings with him the ability to create turnovers. He will be a big part of what we are trying to accomplish defensively in Washington."

Mosley: Makes Sense

Veterans like Phillip Buchanon come at a relatively low cost and have the potential to play a significant role for the Washington Redskins, writes ESPN's Matt Mosley.

1. We need linemen
Offensive linemen. As long as they continue to ignore the glaring weakness, I'm not at all optimistic about next season

As a Cardinals fan I wanted him or anybody really to cover the glaring weakness they have at 2nd CB. McFadden was ok but should be a NB. Adams was burnt all the time and Buchannon has had good seasons so I wanted him to cover the other side of the field opposite of Rogers-Cromartie. I think this is a good pickup for Washington based on the cheap price and due to the fact Fred Smoot(hope the Cards can pick him up) was released so they had a need there.

Anyways the Redskins currently have 11 offensive linemen on roster and this free agency they either signed or re-signed centers Casey Rabach and Will Montgomery. Also signed lineman Mike Williams

5. They have 2-3 people worthy of starters
They have no LT or RT who should be a starter in the NFL

6. It looks that way

I imagine Washington is going to start one of those 2 centers. Mike Shannahan is high on Mike Williams and likes him at the guard position. Rumors popped up on Monday that Washington may be pursuing a trade with Baltimore for LT Jared Gaither. It is very possible OT Russell Okung could fall to Washington in the first round. Also Brian Orakpo who faced him in college says that he would be "a hell of a player." They did miss out on Barry Sims who re-signed with the 49ers last week so I can't think of any other options they have at the moment. I'm also unfamiliar with the other lineman Washington already has on their roster.

Edited to add-Some analysts are predicting Washington to draft Bryan Bulaga an OT from Iowa so that is another option I forgot to mention.

8. Mike Williams is really nothing more than depth.
Id like to draft Okung in the first. Id be willing to placate those who want a QB and draft somebody like a Colt McCoy in the second. Id prefer to draft another lineman in the second.

The reason why I said "Mike Shannahan is high on Mike Williams and likes him at the guard position" is because of this:

Mike Shanahan sees a lot to like in Mike Williams

Big Mike Williams has a big fan in Coach Mike Shanahan, who seems to believe Williams will play an even more prominent role this season than he did in 2009.

"I think Mike has got a very high ceiling," Shanahan said. "The guard is his position, not the tackle position.

"When he did play guard, I thought he played it well, especially losing as much weight as he lost. If he can keep to this whole offseason at the same weight that he finished, and keep on improving, he'll help us."

10. He also said that Stephen Heyer has a lot of untapped talent.
which is complete hogwash. I dont exactly believe everything these coaches say in the media about players they are currently on their team or who they are looking at.
