Yankees----"Notes: Torre setting modest goals"
04/30/2005 3:11 PM ET

"Notes: Torre setting modest goals.

Yankees manager wants team to take aim at .500

NEW YORK -- Looking out from the deepest hole in which he has been as manager of the Yankees, Joe Torre said Saturday morning that he was dismayed to see his team's fire doused earlier this month....."

I'm sure Massah Steinbrenner is very pleased with Torre "setting modest goals" as the Yankees "take aim at .500"

1. *Massah* Steinbrenner is a DEMOCRAT.....
....In the book Tip O'Neil Man of the House...there's a few pages in there which Tip tells the tale of how George was accosted by the pukes for his fundrasing for the Democratic party...just an FYI for all the *Evil Empire* hordes out there. :eyes:

4. Friendly Word of Advice
The DU sports forum is pretty much Red Sox nation and Yankee haters who believe that a professional sports team is pure evil because they pay their players well. They love to gang up on Yankees fans, so you can't win.

Just let them have their fun, for now.

6. well, this Yankee fan doesn't like what he's seeing this year . . .
a lot of it has to do with how Steinbrenner put together this team to "win now" (ain't gonna happen) . . . the list of quality young players that he gave up to sign the marquee names is a long one, and half the current team is just there for the ridiculously large paychecks that they couldn't get anywhere else . . .

but part of the problem is also Joe Torre, who seems to have gotten himself into a managerial rut of his own making . . . yesterday's game was a prime example . . . here he had a young pitcher starting his first game and pretty much cruising along through seven innings . . . he had a 3-2 lead, had only thrown something like 80 pitches, and could easily have finished the game and probably won it . . . but, true to form, Torre lifted him for Tom "Flash" Gordon, who promptly coughed up the tying homer to the first batter he faced . . . that's lousy managing, imo . . .

7. Torre Has Been Living Off The Hard Work Done By Buck Showalter
for years. The Yankee dynasty of the 90s was constructed by Bob Watson, Gene Michael, and Buck Showalter. Torre came in after the core was put together, and he rode them into four WS titles. He's never, ever been a good manager. However, he is great with the media, and that counts for a lot.

However, I can't really blame GS for going after big money players. That's what the fans want. I don't remember any Yankee fan screaming about the Giambi signing, nor the Mussina signing, nor the A-Rod trade, nor the Pavano signing, nor the RJ trade. I don't recall any Yankee fan saying, "No, don't do it".

The real problem with the Yanks this year is that Brian Cashman is a horrible GM. He does not know how to make the little moves that can build a championship team. He doesn't know how to build a bullpen. He doesn't know how to find role players. These are things that GS lets him do on his own without interference.

It's hard for me to be angry at the Yankees. I just don't know how you can feel ill towards a team that has won four championships in the past decade alone.

8. well, here's one Yankee fan who questioned most of those deals . . .
in the past few years, the mistakes the Yankees have made include, imo:

- not re-signing Andy Pettitte
- letting Nick Johnson go and signing Giambi for seven years
- signing A-Fraud and losing Alphonso Soriano
- not re-signing John Lieber this year
- losing Ted Lilly
- signing Kevin Brown
- not re-signing Miguel Cairo, who played really well last year
- not sticking with Jeff Weaver long enough
- signing RJ for three years - he's no Clemens
- not pursuing Carlos Beltran to replace Bernie Williams

if they'd played their cards right, they'd have Nick Johnson at first, Soriano at second, Jeter at short, Matsui in left, Beltran in center, and Posada catching . . . and someone or other at third and in right . . . and their starters could be Pettitte, Mussina, Lieber, Lilly, and that new kid Wang . . . okay, and maybe Johnson, but not for three years . . . that would be a hell of a lot more exciting team than they have now . . .
