McCloughan out as 49ers GM
49ers general manager Scot McCloughan has been relieved of his duties for a "personal matter," according to a Thursday report on AOL Fanhouse.

"I'm fine and moving forward," McCloughan told a Fanhouse reporter via text message.

Team officials have yet to comment on the matter.

The decision comes five weeks before the NFL Draft, where the 49ers hold the 13th and 17th overall picks. The team is expected to fill McCloughan's duties in-house until at least then, according to a source close to the 49ers.

According to the report, the conflict was not related to team issues. Rather, it was because of "longstanding personal issues."

McCloughan joined the 49ers in 2005 as vice president of player personnel, at the same time former head coach Mike Nolan came on board. He was named general manager when the 2008 season ended.

The 49ers are being really tight-lipped about it.

Ray Ratto, S.F. Chronicle columnist, touched upon the worst case scenario of president Jed York possibly stepping into a larger role, a la Jerry Jones. His fine piece is here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/03/19/SPUN1CI1OC.DTL

Not that big a loss, IMO (unless it leads to York getting involved). I wish they could have signed Mike Holmgren. A huge opportunity -- missed.
