Kornheiser and Wilbon are the John Stewarts of the Sports World
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 09:15 AM by Captain Hilts
They deal with a lot of heavy issues - you won't find better, more frank discussions of racism anywhere on television than Kornheiser and Wilbon have. They're both progressives that talk about corporate greed, workers' rights, sexism, and they bring their progressive views to an audience who might not otherwise hear them.

Tony's national ESPN talk show - while broadcasting from the Super bowl - talked in detail about what a farce it was the Republicans were impeaching Bill Clinton. They talk about everything, consistently in the progressive vein.

But they do it with humor.

1. Exactly.
Most people only know them from PTI, but they've been fixtures in the Washington Area for a long long time and their back n forth humorous columns were highly humorous and entertaining. I've always liked Wilbon a smidgeon more but TK is a funny guy. Oh and he makes no bones about the fact that he knows he's a schmuck. Which I respect.

2. They compliment one another. Tony's taking a full hour on a national radio show
to discuss his colonoscopy was a riot.

He also participated on his show from a doctor's office when he broke an ankle and let the listeners chime in on what theme his cast should have. I remember Smurfs were one of the alternatives. I can't remember which he chose.

So, us DC folks know he doesn't take himself, or much else, seriously.

For that reason, when he and Wilbon buckle down and talk about something serious, it has all the more meaning. Race, corporate greed, violence against women, whatever.
