Short track speed skating is more similar to NASCAR than luge
Someone around here was saying that if you like NASCAR then you should watch Luge. I think short track is more similar. Short track speedskating is like Bristol or Richmond. It's tight. There's some "rubbin." And there's plenty of accidents.

6. lol :) -- I think I've told this story before, but
Ms. fishwax and I went to the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, and one of the events we went to was the Super G, which because it was at a site with very limited parking, involved being bussed up to the slope and then (since we were on one of the first buses in order to get a good viewing spot) waiting for a looooooong time for the event to start.

While we were waiting, they showed some other olympic events on the big video screen/scoreboard. At one point they showed half an hour or so of curling, and the entire crowd was absolutely mesmerized. I don't imagine most of them knew any more about curling than I did at the time (which was not much at all), but there were a couple thousand of us who were absolutely riveted to that screen. As the stone would make it's way down the ice, the crowd would get louder and more excited. If you've watched Grand Slam tennis and heard the crowd build into a roar when they have the computer animated tennis ball on the replay, it was like that. And when there was a takeout (a stone knocking another stone out of scoring position) the crowd really roared. And this was just watching it on the video screen.

Anyway, I've been a fan of curling since then. If I ever have another chance to go to the Winter Games, I'm definitely trying to score curling tickets.

:)

8. Awesome, fishwax.
I love me the the Olympics! Great story. I enjoy watching all aspects. The Daytona 500? Uniquely American. And, uniquely fucking boring.

10. I got hooked on curling during the last Olympics
Just thought I'd watch to see what all the jokes were about and it drew me in right away. Does anyone know when the curling starts? I like the curling commercial..."Not in my house, not this time"!! :)

17. Thank you so much for this!
I'm going to sign up now. I'm climbing the walls being unemployed, but am glad I'll be able to catch more of the games. The winter Olympics has always been my favorite and they've gotten off to a very exciting start for our team!

Thanks again :patriot:

Guy throws big heavy rock, other guys sweep ice, to achieve the result of shuffleboard. Yet, when it's on, i'll watch it.

9. That was GREAT!
Very exciting races tonight...Ohno really is a smart skater and that J.R. kid is adorable! Congrats to them both.

Luge got a little hairy when that American hit the top of the wall, which the announcer said was CONCRETE! The women's moguls have been exciting, too. I could do without the commercials every 5 minutes, though.

They said one skier had had three operations on EACH of them.

But between laughing at the two Koreans who crashed into each other trying to beat Apollo Ohno and daring the the judges to give the Canadian mogul skier the gold over the American, I've suddenly turned into a jingoistic twit!

21. Short track = NASCAR, yes; not luge
Which is why I hate short track - it's all about these collisions, really, not speed. I think they should just go ahead and make roller derby an Olympic sport, and maybe change short track rules to roller derby on ice.

As for curling, I'll be taking my physics class curling next week...

22. Snowboarding is like that too
They send four guys down the hill at once. Personally, I think they should do downhill skiing like that too. Send the racers down the hill in groups of 5 or 10. They could use their poles for jabbing or tripping the other skiers.
