Giants broadcaster Jon Miller wins Ford C Frick Award..

Jon Miller, well into his fourth decade of broadcasting as the vibrant voice of the San Francisco Giants, is the 2010 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award.

Presented annually since 1978 in recognition of contributions to baseball broadcasting, Ford C. Frick Award winners have their own wing in Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame.

Announcement of Miller's selection by a specially-selected 20-member electorate was made by Jeff Idelson, the president of the Hall of Fame, who called the 36-year veteran of local and national broadcasts "one of baseball's most recognizable voice."

A native of San Francisco, Miller became the Oakland A's play-by-play announcer in 1974, and thereafter moved into the booths of the Rangers (1978-79), Red Sox (1980-82) and Orioles (1983-96), prior to coming home to take over Giants broadcasts in 1997.

While in Baltimore, Miller also joined former Frick Award winners Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek on NBC-TV's Game of the Week telecasts from 1986-89. In 1990, Miller took over ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts.

"With a national audience on Sunday nights for the last 20 years," Idelson said, "an entire country has been able to enjoy on a weekly basis what fans in San Francisco, Baltimore, Boston, Texas and Oakland have known with Miller as their home team's broadcaster for varied points over the last four decades.

"His soothing play-by-play, his affable and welcoming personality and his relaxed nature on-air give every baseball fan a personal invitation to enjoy the game, as if each was sitting in the front row."

Miller will be honored as an award recipient during the Hall's induction weekend, July 23-26 in Cooperstown.

He will be sharing the spotlight with Hall of Fame inductee Andre Dawson, Veteran Committee electees Whitey Herzog and Doug Harvey, and Bill Madden, winner of the 2010 J.G. Taylor Spink Award for excellence in baseball writing.

3. Correction...
Miller was with the Orioles from 1983-96, with the Giants 1997-2010. Demonstrating that your remark of "he spent far more time as the Orioles announcer" is just plain out wrong. Looks like almost exactly the same amount of time to me.

Miller is a native of San Francisco, he used to listen to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons growing up...Sure, he had a job in Baltimore, but now Jon is doing what he loves...announcing for his favorite boyhood team.

Miller is ALL Giant...

17. Close enough
And do you REALLY think he would have left Baltimore unless he had too? He's said as much, that he loved Baltimore. So go right ahead and think someone who chose SF as a BACK UP CHOICE is all Giants..ROFL. "True Giant"= I can't get a job elsewhere...

2. I enjoy listening to Joe Morgan & Jon Miller. Both a easy to listen to and
informative.

re "rich Giants organization": You must be referring to their EAST coast history. The one that has won FIVE World Series' for the city of NEW YORK! Too bad they have not been able to win one for the kids of Frisco!

18. Um...Morgan spent his best years in Cincinnatti
as an integral part of the "Big Red Machine", one of the best teams in the last thirty years. Rose, Morgan, Bench, Perez, Griffey, Sr., Concepcion, manager Sparky Anderson were a juggernaut. Morgan arrived in SF towards the end of his career, after spending many years in Houston and as already mentioned, Cincy.

16. Seriously?
Joe Morgan is the absolute worst next to Tim McCarver. He keeps repeating everything a million times till you just want to reach through the TV and strangle him. I don't have a problem with Jon Miller. He's aiight. Does a great Vin Scully impression, talking about great HOF announcers!

Scully, Lon Simmons and Bill King are my faves. RIP, Bill.

4. Holy Toledo... the award should go to the late, great Bill King.

King called radio for the Oakland A's for many years.

Miller drives me nuts on radio... he never shuts up. He's better suited for television, IMO.

to lobby for Bill King.

There's chatter that adds to the play/game and then there's chatter for the sake of chatter, which, to my ears, I'm hearing more and more from Jon Miller. On radio. IMO.

Frankly, who gives a shit in this forum outside of Bay Area regulars? We never talk about Beantown. Or Dallas.

You're right! This really has become a west coast biased forum, except for the mindless hatred of America's Team.

12. the combination of him and Morgan on ESPN
drives me to point of insanity. Its like they compete to say stupid things. The firejoemorgan.com blog was dedicated to this when it first started.

11. The talent and personality of Bill King
transcended any mere award. Anyway, I think his best work was in football with the Raiders..

And I like when he's messing with Joe Morgan. They both really seem to be enjoying themselves.

After Vin Scully, my second choice would be Miller and Morgan.
