A little early for gloating.

5. Say what you must, but the Yanks are the proverbial 500 pound gorilla.
They are too good of a team to stay in the basement for any length of time. I'm hoping for a repeat of last year, but I'm not placing any bets on it.

I just hope it's not going to be another 86 years.

6. As a Red Sox fan, I won't rub it in
But I will say that as a fan, I have experienced these slumps, moments of glory, dashed dreams, renewed vigor, more times than I can count. We'll see how good their fan base is if this continues.

All teams have good years and bad, good starts and bad, mid season slumps and hot streaks, and despite the huge payroll, and maybe because steroids are off the table, they are going to have their turn to cry.

I get the sense from the Yankees that they are a team of stars, without a lot of "us" in their gameplan. They don't seem to like each other very much, and they all have their finger on their bottom line. The money may be good, but the control that the owner exerts on them isn't worth it, IMHO...the haircuts, the facial hair thing...I mean, come on. It ain't Catholic school, they aren't 12 years old (though some act like it) and individuality makes the whole experience much more fun.

7. You touched on a good point: they lack chemistry
As a Yankee fan, I am not looking forward to this season. Sure, we have a bunch of great players, but there's no cohesion; no chemistry. The reason why we won throughout the '90's was because the team played well together. These guys are a hodgepodge of other teams and the nucleus from the 90's--Jeter, Rivera, Bernie, Posada--are getting old (well, not Jeter).

Then again, there is a lot of talent, so they probably will pick it up soon. They're too talented not to. But ultimately it won't go very far. But if I owned the team, I would dump A-Rod right off and get some pitching.

10. A Rod gets it from all comers!
He was just a signature away from wearing a Sox uniform, and I swear, the Yanks signed him in large part to "rub it in" -- not because they especially needed him. At any rate, he sure isn't giving much value for the dollar.

The initial disappointment in Boston re: A Rod was totally dissipated when he slapped that ball out of the glove (then it became THANK GOD WE DIDN'T GET HIM!!!). Funny, that was the point when I really started to believe we COULD go all the way, so A ROD was helpful in that regard...when you think about it, the guy was just trying to make his best deal, and he got used--a well paid prostitute, essentially.

11. I think the Yankees were wrong to trade for A-Rod
Soriano was a fine second baseman for them.

12. He started slow last year, too
As did Jeter. Both picked it up soon enough.

This is fun, talking smack and all. But I picked the Yanks to win the WS this year. I'll be surprised if I am wrong.

17. You hit the nail right on the head--that's exactly my take!
And we both can't be wrong, can we?

The last few years they've been missing "it." They've got the talent as you note--tons of it--but missing that something, chemistry, that makes them tick as a team.

I don't know how they can change that. Maybe it is to get rid of A-Rod, because he certainly hasn't been worth the money. I don't think a change of management is needed--I like Joe Torre. But they do need to do something to shake things up.

in the car. Cool. Yankees. SNICKER! Sorry. I know this could mean war but given the forty five years I've wanted ANYONE to beat them, this is nice to hear.

9. Yes, it was Brian Roberts
He did it with two outs too, in fact all the runs that game in during the inning were with two outs. It was really nice to see, I for once actually have faith in my team, normally down by 3 with two outs and against the Yankees, they wont be able to do it but tonight they did.

16. they're just not a whole lot of fun to watch this year . . .
there's definitely something missing . . . there's no passion, no team spirit, none of that Yankee swagger . . . with a few exceptions, this team just seems to be a bunch of hired guns who are there for the money and don't really care about winning or about the Yankee tradition . . . right now, the Mets are much more fun to watch . . .

20. If April meant much of anything,
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 11:04 AM by HuckleB
I'd say there's reason for Yankees fans to be concerned. Alas, it means little, with the exception of the M's, whose April record somehow correlates to its season record quite well.

The one thing that might be worrying Yankee fans is that they're losing with everyone healthy, and this may be the most fragile club in baseball.

21. Yeah orioles usually get off to get Aprils and early Mays
but come June and July, Hell breaks loose and we go ten games under 500, an exception to this rule is last year, in fact the team had just gone above 500, then had a grostesque 11 game losing streak, yet oddly it was the best season I seen out of the orioles since around 98-99 when Ray Miller managed the team.

22. I've no problem rubbing it in!
I hate the Yanks. Don't get me wrong, I've been a baseball fan for a while now and know good baseball when I see it. But they are SO successful it's every fans duty to take a shot at them. Unless you are a Yankee fan of course..............

23. I was watching the NY news last night...
I forget which channel but the anchor said something to this effect "The last time the Yankee's have been this bad at the start of the season...the song Rico Suave was on the top of the charts" For some reason that really made me laugh

25. Well, considering there are 2 million games in one baseball season
Nothing that happens now really matters. I don't even pay attention until after the all-star break, because last place teams can be 500 games behind first place because there are still a million games left.

I remember it was either this year or last year a bunch of Boston fans were talking about at the first of the year how the Yankees weren't even gonna make the playoffs. Then the Yankees won the division.

It's way to early in the season to predict anything.
