Mike Leach ... To NFL's Oakland Raiders?
Mike Leach Rides Lubbock Railroad All the Way To NFL's Oakland Raiders?

by Henry Ball

Fired Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach—who was terminated for allegedly punishing backup wide receiver Adam James for having a concussion—has been relatively quiet since giving his side of the story to ESPN's Rece Davis.

Things might be about to heat up as rumors are surfacing that Al Davis is considering Leach to replace head coach Tom Cable, who will apparently be fired as expected.

There is no confirmation yet for the other rumor that "sheds" have been ordered in small, medium, and Jamarcus sizes, perhaps Leach can borrow some from Lubbock.

Since Leach has said that he will always be a Raider, it does seem fitting that Leach would trade Texas Tech Red for Oakland Silver. The new boss will likely not shy away from controversy if his history means anything.

3. Leach is fascinated by pirates. And pirates are raiders, to a degree
From WIKI:

Famous among fans for his fascination with 18th century pirates such as Blackbeard and Calico Jack, Leach has lectured his players on the history of pirates, and told them before games to "swing their swords." His office has been described as a museum of pirate paraphernalia.

In particular, Leach admires the teamwork exhibited by pirates: “Pirates function as a team. There were a lot of castes and classes in England at the time. But with pirates, it didn't matter if you were black, white, rich or poor. The object was to get a treasure. If the captain did a bad job, you could just overthrow him."

--------------------------------------------

Maybe he could overthrow Al Davis?

To his credit, he has developed college quarterbacks. Sounds like Davis is looking for someone to work a miracle with JaMarcus Russell.

6. One thing about Al Davis most people do not know...
the guy has a heart of gold.

Seriously.

Living in the Bay Area I hear a lot of stories on Talk Radio how Al has gone out of his way to help those down on their luck... players and ex-players (and not just Raiders), coaches, office personal, etc. Call Al, and unless you've really screwed him over in the past, he'll be there for you.

If Leach is hired it'll be because Davis, dinosaur that he is, believes Leach is a guy capable of salvaging the career of JaMarcus Russell. And he'd be giving a second chance to a coach whose star is suddenly a bit tarnished.

Hey, it could work out.

7. I'd laugh for a month
Leach is the most overrated coach of all time. His offense would be obliterated in the pros, the NFL equivalent of Westhead at the Nuggets.

Leach did nothing more than turn Texas Tech from a 7-5 program into an 8-4 program, and solely via softer non conference schedules. Check the '90s non conference schedules that Spike Dykes faced, compared to Leach's games, particularly in recent years. The Raider is a wimp.

Let's see, 82-85% of NFL games are won by the team with the highest number of rushing attempts. That holds up every year. It was 15 our of 16 last weekend, sole exception the Charger game.

Leach would be even worse than Andy Reid in trying to overcome the deficit. At least Reid normally rushes 20 odd times per game. Leach would be hard pressed to find 10 rushes. BTW, that's exactly the number that Reid tried last weekend, 10 rushing attempts.

I hope Al Davis goes for it. I need more easy bets.
