Is QB Mystery Helping or Hurting Browns?
http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/2674/is-qb-mystery-helping-or-hurting-browns

In an effort to create a competitive advantage, Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini isn’t revealing who his starting quarterback will be this week.

With two drop-back passers, I wonder if the Minnesota Vikings are really all that concerned.

Most people expect Brady Quinn to be the starter. And although the Vikings, who have a very good defense, will now spend a portion of practice preparing for Derek Anderson, an educated guess is they’re studying the same film everyone else saw when Quinn created separation in this quarterback derby during the preseason.

But with the regular season set to begin, here is the biggest question: At what point does Mangini’s ultra-secretive approach hurt the Browns more than the opponent?

I think Mangini is handling this like a d**k.

1. No difference - it doesn't help or hurt

Dick is too strong of a word for this type of situation. We'll find out who's starting on Sunday but as far as the opposing defense game planing I don't think it has an effect as they're both pocket passers.

3. He said he already knows who the starter is but he is not telling the media

I'm sure whoever the QB is already knows. He just isn't telling the media.

I know who is going to be the starter. Brady Quinn, and I'm not into making predictions but Quinn will be the starter for week 1.

Not naming a starting quarterback doesn't help Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini
by John DeShazier, The Times-Picayune Tuesday September 08, 2009, 12:04 PM
Outside the Cleveland Browns locker room - and, perhaps, inside the Browns locker room - no one yet knows who Coach Eric Mangini selected as his regular-season starting quarterback for Sunday's opener against Minnesota.

What, exactly, is Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini accomplishing by not naming a starting quarterback this week. And some NFL coaches wonder why people believe they take themselves a little too seriously.

Obviously, all the comparisons to football being war, references to games being epic battles and strategizing sessions that last hours upon hours have had a cumulative effect, to the point where the military at least should consider suing over naming rights. The NFL boasts of "war rooms" and fights "in the trenches" and coaches practice a level of subterfuge that'd be amusing if they didn't seem to take such pride in it.

Also, I hope it doesn't hurt them because Bret Favor looking like crap in week one will make my millenium!

5. He or she is probably angry he hasn't revealed it to the media
These are the facts.

Browns coach Eric Mangini keeps mum on whether Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson will start at QB

CLEVELAND - The Browns' starting quarterback remains Eric Mangini's secret. And he'll keep it as long as he can.

Mangini said Monday he has finally made his choice between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, but the former Jets coach declined to identify who will start Sunday's opener against Minnesota.

The former Jets coach said he said won't reveal who will open at QB anytime between now and kickoff.

"In terms of announcing it publicly, that's not something I plan to do," he said. "It will be internal. I understand everybody has a different opinion on it. I respect that. I understand the excitement in relationship to that and I respect that as well. But that will be something that will be internal."

Somehow if the media doesn't know everything he is killing the Browns. Like Mike Golic said this is a case of him overthinking the situation by in his mind forcing the defense to gameplan for two quarterbacks rather then one but since they're both pocket passers it really doesn't have an effect either way.

I quit paying attention to "experts" because half the time they're wrong. Skip Bayless is the worst of all of them.

6. He...
...that said, i don't think there should have even been a competition...Andersen never proved himself...Quinn did well when used sparingly...one's young...one has promise...the whole idea there was a competition was a joke in itself.

7. I agree
Quinn clearly outperformed Anderson this preseason which is why I believe Quinn will start.

9. And after the Favor-Fiasco...I have to wonder if mangini is trying
to assert himself now since he really had no control last season with the jets.

20. Just because he didn't tell the media, doesn't mean the team doesn't know.
I don't see how not telling the media is such a bad thing.
