Your greatest sports high so far this year, and your lowest low?
Mine are the same:

High: The Spartans beating USC, Kansas, Louisville, Connecticut in the NCAA basketball tournament, with the Final Four in Detroit. Wow. I bleed green and white. What a run.

Low: Spartans getting blown out by NC in the title game. Congrats, Tar Heels. This was your year. We'll be back, though.

High: Red Wings rolling through the playoffs, taking a 3-2 lead over the Penguins with home-ice advantage.

Low: Pens beating us at home in game 7. When I went back to Michigan just to watch it with my buddies of so many years. Ouch.

High: Tom Watson, at weeks away from 60, leading every round of the British Open, and coming to 18 on the final day needing just a par.

Low: Ugh. Do I have to say it? Great second shot on 18, but one club too many. I don't care if he is a conservative. That would have been one of the great wins not only of this year, but of all time, in any sport.

Anyway, onwards. That's sports. Bring on football! Who's with me on the Lions winning the Super Bowl?!?

2. High: Arizona State making the tournament and beating Temple
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 06:40 PM by JonLP24
Low: Arizona State losing to Syracuse in the very next round.

Low: Barack Obama choose Temple to beat Arizona State in his bracket when Arizona State was obviously the better team through the regular season. :grr:

High: SG James Harden from Arizona State was named 1st Team All-American. First one to be named an All-American since Ike Diogu or Eddie House. One of the two.

Ask me after both football seasons and I'll have more to pick from.

EDIT/ One more LOW, Arizona State losing to Texas in the College World Series in EXTRA innings. :argh:

10. Technically it was last year, but did happen within the past year so...
High: Phillies win the World Series and the ensuing parade in Philly.
Low: Eagles lose another NFC Championship Game to god awful Kurt Warner and the lucky Cardinals.

High: Florida beats Oklahoma for their 2nd championship in 3 years.
Low: Penguins knock out the Flyers again and then go on to win the Cup (amidst some terrible officiating)

11. Kurt Warner should have been up for consideration for MVP
67% passes completed, 4,500 passing yards, and 30 touchdowns I don't see how he was not. Then I figured it out when some ESPN announcers were pushing Falcons QB Matt Ryan. Yeah, he had a good year but no where near as well as Warner. 4 Time Pro Bowler is not someone that is god awful.

I won't address lucky except for the fact people only say 'luck' when their team loses.

19. What I really mean by god awful is that I can't stand the guy.
I wouldn't deny that he had a good season, but let's be honest: Warner's success this past year was primarily due to the offensive weapons he had around him, namely Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Take away those kinds of players and he's just an average QB.

As for them being lucky...they only got to the playoffs because they play in such a weak division. They got home field advantage over the Eagles despite having a worse record, meaning they didn't have to play on the East Coast (where they were awful other than the Carolina game) and we had to fly out west then play at 3 in the afternoon. Their running game was worst in the league during the regular season and their defense wasn't great either. They hit a hot streak in the playoffs but fortunately were stopped short of winning it all.

Congratulations on getting to the Super Bowl last year, but it's not gonna happen this time around.

21. I can't stand him either but he is a good QB
Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 12:21 AM by JonLP24
Take away Jerry Rice from Steve Young and see how good he is. Take away Irvin from Aikman and see how good he is. That argument is one that really doesn't fly considering you being a fan of the Eagles, McNabb's best numbers was the year they had Terrell Owens and the only time he threw 30 or more touchdowns, something Kurt Warner accomplished 3 times. They only had a worse record due to a tie, otherwise it would be the same record but a tie to the Bengals is a freakin' loss.

Let's talk about the Cardinals schedule objectively please? They swept their division which accounts for 6 games and if they didn't beat the 49ers twice, the 49ers would be a 9-7 team. They played 4 games against the AFC East, Patriots (11-5), Dolphins (11-5), NY Jets (9-7), Bills (7-9) Pretty good conference with 3 teams over .500 and the worst team boasts a 7-9 record. Ok they played 4 games against the NFC East which your team the Eagles played 6, just 2 more then the Cardinals. (12-4),(9-6-1),(9-7),(8-8)

I just accounted for 7 out of 8 games with .500 or better records with a 7-9 team making the 8th team.

But wait there's more! They played the Division Champion Minnesota Vikings(10-6) and the NFC South Champ Carolina (12-4) in the regular season.

Let's count 'em up.
The Cardinals played 9 Games against teams with a .500 record or better. 1 7-9 team and the (7-9) 49ers twice. So 12 games were 7-9 and better.

That is a really strong schedule that is often overlooked. They look at the division and figure the Cardinals played 16 games against their own division, I don't get it.

To put in perspective you got to factor in every member of the NFC West played 8 games total vs the divisions NFC East and AFC East. Also the Cardinals had to fly out East in 4 of those games as well as flying out East against Carolina in the NFC Divisional AND the regular season so that argument won't fly either.

As far as going back most teams don't but it's to early to making these predictions like you're some kind of football god.

On edit, you said take away Fitzgerald and Boldin. You forgot Steve Breaston who also had 1,000 yards receiving and Boldin missed 4 games in the regular season not to mention the Cardinals beat Carolina without Anquan Boldin because of an injury becase of a long touchdown run in the Wild Card round against Atlanta.

22. Of course McNabb's best season was with T.O but he still put up
great numbers and went to multiple pro bowls without any great receivers like Warner has had.

A tie is a tie regardless of who you're playing. True, we played a pretty poor game against a team we should have creamed, but 9-6-1 is still better than 9-7 (just ask the Cowgirls).

You swept the NFC West. Kudos. The Eagles did the very same thing in the regular season including a 48-20 beatdown of the Cardinals. We also beat the Rams 38-3, the Niners 40-26, and the Seahawks 26-7. Like you said, we played NFC East 6 times, posting a pretty poor 2-4 record, but being only the 2nd team to beat the Giants (in the Meadowlands) and destroying Dallas in week 17 to clinch a playoff spot. We played AFC North, home to arguably the 2 best teams in the Conference and defeated the eventual Super Bowl Champions in Week 3.

Granted you guys had to play on the East Coast a few times, but look at what happened when you did. Lost to Philly, New England, New York Jets, Carolina, and Washington. Beat the Bills. Lost to the Giants and Vikings at home. Going 3-7 against teams outside your division just isn't that impressive.

I don't claim to be a football god and I rarely make these kinds of predictions as I know I'll feel like an idiot if I'm wrong (it could happen) but I just see the Cardinals as being a team similar to the 2007 Rockies. Talented and confident, but more the result of a hot streak than anything else. With Seattle likely to be improved this year and possibly the Niners as well, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cardinals not win the division this year, much less the conference.

23. Playing outside the division was against Great teams
Like I said NFC East, AFC East, and TWO division Champs Minnesota and Carolina. You said yourself the Eagles didn't do well against their own division but they were blessed with the NFC West and AFC North which boasts good teams but also has Cleveland and Cincinatti as well as playing against Chicago which they lost but they did play Atlanta which is a good team. The only reason why I did bring up they traveled 5 times to the Eastern timezone is because you say the Cardinals were lucky because the Eagles traveled West but it is different because on the West you gain hours rather then lose hours.

I don't know much I have to say it was a little more then just luck. They opened the playoffs against Atlanta an 11-5 team that ranked in the top 5 in rushing which the Cards beat, then traveled on the road to play Carolina a 12-4 team ranked in the top 5 in rushing which the Cards crushed then beat against your fantastic, awesome, GREAT team to go on to lose to the eventual Super Bowl Champs. My point in all this it was more then luck they got this far. Maybe you aught to thank the Cardinals for beating the Cowboys which led the Eagles making the playoffs if anyone is lucky in all this which I think no one is. The

As far as what will happen this season we will see but the team in the NFC West that has been doing the improving the last 2-3 years is the Cardinals and they are continuing to improve. They added Bryant McFadden to the secondary and drafted a pretty good running back Chris Wells. Also Antrell Rolle and Rogers-Cromartie will have more experience and should be better. They also resigned Adrian Wilson who has been an under the radar GREAT safety his whole career but he needs to improve in coverage but he is a great tackler as well as known for his BIG hits.

12. Oh dear. We only agree on Watson's choke job.
File UConn's choke job under Lows, and the Pens winning a Game 7 on the road, against the team that beat them on their home ice last year, under Highs. Plus the Pens had previously driven the stake into the heart of the Whalers Hurricanes.

Other Highs: Steelers escaping with a win over uber-fundie Kurt Warner. We would still be hearing about it if Kurt and Jebus had been able to hang on for 35 more seconds. :scared:

In a similar vein, Lakers stomping the Amway-owned Orlando Magic.

And of course, Buehrle's perfect game.

Lows: Teblow and Co.'s title (see under Warner).

there will be no playoffs, not with Miami playing a REAL schedule. "Chad" won't be able to take it...might as well have your new owner Jennifer Lopez playing QB, she's no doubt tougher and can probably throw the ball further.

Nah. At least Millen's gone. But given one playoff win since 1957 - one - I'm just entertained by them. When Barry was there, that was exciting. Calvin Johnson is a beast, and as good as anyone in the NFL. Jason Hanson is a Hall of Fame kicker.

That's about it.
