Mets over LA 5-4 backed by amazing gem of a play by Murphy
No, this is not a gloat thread.

This had to be one of the worst pitching performances by a Mets started this or close to it. 7 walks and Ollie still gets the win. Goes to show that W-L are kind of a shit statistic when looking at pitchers.

Play by Daniel Murphy one of the more amazing defensive plays I've seen by the Mets infield. That's going to be talked about for years and seen on highlight reels in NY for a very long time.

I vowed after last nights game to take a break till after the All-Star Break. Then I kinda figured I'd watch the first few innings to see if David Wright could break out of his slump. Good to see him hit the ball hard and go 2-4. Picked up an RBI and scored two runs.

I'll chalk this up as one of those teaser games though. Just like last weeks amazing win verses Pittsburgh. Not to mention the series against St Louis where they took 3-4.

Hopefully the rest of the way they can develop some depth with Murphy but I still think this guy has miles to go. Wouldn't mind seeing the Mets pick up Nik Johnson at some point. Like a lot of their other players he's very injury prone but if he stays healthy can bat .290 and add at least 100 walks a year.

A line up next season that looked like Reyes, Wright, Johnson and Beltran as the top four hitters would be sick. Beltran would feast with that lineup.

1. Yes, but we know the Chokers will fuck it up next season too
I'm pretty sure they're already mathematically eliminated.

2. The Mets have actually won a few world series in their day
not that you would anything about that or what that feels like.

I do hear the team in Frisco as well as the fans are experts in the art of choking though. 55 years straight of either sucking or blowing balls.

What's their all time record in the World the series as a Franchise 5 for 20 in their 130 year existance?

3. Ollie?
Yeah, Ollie is another brilliant move by the Chokers.. for he is making $12 million this year and is 2-2 with an ERA of 8.78...ya' think he's worth the money?

7. Not quite
Zito is 5-8 ERA 4.43.. Not exactly where we'd like him to be, but his ERA is half that of Perez.

Most Giants fans, myself included, will admit the Zito contract was a mistake....but he is the only Giant making more than 10 million this year, on a team with an average payroll of 82 million. Yet, the Giants are still winning.

8. And these are the best numbers he's had since coming to SF...
Every team has bad contracts and overpaid players, but teams that spend more are more noticeable because the numbers are bigger. Especially teams that spend more and under perform (like the Mets). When a guy's numbers would put him at $5 million, but he gets paid $10 million, it really stands out. When a guy's numbers put him at about 500k, but he's making 2 million, people rarely notice, which is why small market teams don't get as much grief for bad contracts, though they have many.

11. I recall the year Zito hit the market
And the Mets were dying for starting pitching. A lot of people were looking at Zito as a possibly and one to the teams rumored to be in the lead was the Mets. As soon as that rumor came out they quashed it immediatly. Lots of folks around baseball and especially the writers in New York did not see Zito worth what he was asking.

Not signing Zito was proabably one of the best moves I think the Mets have made in the last ten years. Zito got that contract mainly cause there wasn't much else available on the market that year in terms of "quality" starting pitching. Anyone that was desperate enough had to be prepared for Zito to name his price.

Perez and Zito are both simialar in that they are both terrible deals and most folks knew at the time they were offered these guys don't have it in them to live up to them.

12. What about Billy Wagner?
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 03:50 PM by Upton
Out for the year but making 10.5 million because of a guaranteed contract...

You put Perez and Wagner's contracts together and that's 22.5 million this year...for 2 lousy wins and an ERA of almost 9.00

the Chokers just throw money away.

BTW, I wouldn't compare Perez with Zito..at least Barry, being a former Cy Young winner, has a track record. Perez has always been a mediocre pitcher at best ..he went 2-10 in 2006 and has lost more games than he has won for his career.

13. Wagner was a good signing
No doubt of that.

You're reaching there CBuptonoy.

Barry Zito has been nothing close to his former Cy Young self. His ERA the last six or so seasons has been up at 4.0. Since Zito's 23 win 2002 he's at one year where he got more than 15 wins (16 in 2006) the rest he's maxed at 14.

Even if you combine the contracts of Perez and Wagner it's only 4 mill more than that bum of a contract you're giving to Zito at 18 mill.

You guys really trying to justify Zito getting Johan Santana money by using Perez (12 mill a season) and Wagner (10.5 a season)?

That stupidest thing I've seen come out of Frisco in a while.

BTW; One of you announcer called the Mets VS Dodgers tilt last night and made an complets ass of himself. This guy had no clue before this game that Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan were once Mets pitchers.

Embarassing.

Way to represent.

14. But at least Wagner pitched well when healthy
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 04:18 PM by hughee99
You can't always anticipate injuries, but most people knew Perez and Zito weren't worth the money they got when they were signed, even if healthy.

Based on his previous numbers, you'd think the Dodgers signing Jason Schmidt to a 3 year $47 mil might not have been that bad of a deal at the time given his performance and durability in SF, but they ended up paying him $47 million per win. Like Wagner, the deal didn't look awful at the time, but in retrospect Schmidt was a disaster, far more then Wagner who performed well until injured.

10. Perez is pretty much a lost cause
I was hoping he was gonna walk last season. Now we are stuck with him for two more seasons after this.

He's more of a 4th or 5th starter. Has the stuff to be an ace but just never developed. His control has to be the worst of any major league pitcher.

9. That play by Murphy I doubt we ever see again in our lifetime
Was even stunned to see Parnell completely follow through on that play to the base.

15. That was a great play
If not for that, the Dodgers would have had a sweep instead of just humiliating the Mets on their home field, winning the series by taking the final game 11-2.

It was less of a game and more of a batting practice thrown by the washed up Livan Hernandez. 17 hits by the team that leads the league in hits by over 40.
