14. Yikes, there it is. Hi, Bluebear. I lost track of this thread and

didn't realize it had been moved. I wanted to say thanks to you for putting Rev. Shanks' xenophobia and homophobia and sin-a-phobia and just-about-everything-a-phobia in front of us in this thread because it is a classic example of a fundamentalist riling up his followers and urging them to assent to a culture of fear and violence.

It's like some guy egging on the crowd which has gathered with stones to kill the woman taken in adultery. It's one thing for someone to be an ignorant asshole, and still another to be an ignorant asshole with a rock in his hand.

When Shanks invokes the Old Testament Jehovah as GREAT PUNISHER, he is reinforcing his congregations' feelings that prostitutes, drinkers, gamblers, and gays etc. deserve punishment and are exiled from God's love. How nice it would be if that were a wildly outdated idea but there is Shanks, and Dobson, and Robertson, et al, all throwing more logs onto that fire.

You have a keen knack for culling the important stuff from a pile of news garbage and putting it before us for our consideration and comments. I love the way you do it and I'm glad you're on DU.
