Scouting for the rest of us....
Spiral Scouts: pagans and everybody else welcome
http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=8709

snip:

It’s a little before noon on a Saturday, and seven children are gathered around a table in a cozy Troy home, scribbling with markers. Many are dressed in uniform, sporting neatly pressed khakis and crisp green polo shirts. The boys and girls, ages 3 to 10, are busily decorating a box they’ll later fill with dry goods. It’s part of their latest community service initiative, and will be donated to Compassion Pregnancy Centers (an organization that works with pregnant women in high-risk situations) in Clinton Township.

1. I'm so glad to hear of this group!
I know that nearly 20 years ago, some Sufis created their own "scout" group for their kids, but I think the group petered out as the kids grew up. I wish this group all the best. Blessed be.

11. Why?
Because one of their craft projects is Faith Salad?

2. This is great! I'd love to see more non-BSA scouts
The idea that belief in God is somehow related to good citizenship and that theist and atheist children ought not to get together and tie knots or whittle or whatever is really repugnant.

4. They could do a better job at "outdoors training" ...
"After the crafts project has been completed, the children gather around while Chris reads them a tale explaining the winter solstice, or yule, in terms of the sun becoming more and more tired as the year goes on."

Yeah, that's honest. That's teaching the children about nature. That shows respect for their minds.

Why is their money going to a right-wing Christian organization?

5. I think the Spirals are kind of pagan-ish, which is not my thing, but
at least they won't throw my kids out once they find out they don't believe the sun gets tired in December.

Ah. You're right. It looks like the "Compassion" center is the old Crisis Pregnancy Center in disguise.... Very tricky. Don't know why the Spiral Scouts would support that group.

10. CPC's are good at disguising themselves and their agenda.
That's basically their modus operandi.

7. Nice catch, greyl.
Red flags all over this. If you can't convert those nasty Wiccans, at least take their money and give it to anti-choice groups.

13. And that matters...how?
Like the newspapers say, I'm just providing information, not endorsing it.
Taking the time to believe me is a waste of your energy.

14. I guess taking the time to explain why it matters
would be an even bigger waste of my energy, eh? :)
