Right Wing Christians Mobilize Prayer Teams to Pray Away Occupy Wall Street
http://www.politicususa.com/en/right-pray-away-occupy-wall-street

"Once there was a summer of love. People were protesting not to take rights away, not to hate, but to grant rights – and to love. Welcome almost half a century later to the winter of hate.

The Family Research Council, which likes to claim it advances “faith, family and freedom” as “core values” doesn’t actually care much for freedom. The FRC wants God to do away with the evil rabble occupying Wall Street. But what are the protestors doing after all but protesting on behalf of their – and our – freedom? Significantly, FRC wants to pray the whole thing away, rather like similar prayer movements have prayed gasoline back down to a dollar a gallon. As Rick Perry would say, “Ooops.” Never mind….

Okay, so since the gas thing didn’t work out, how about “labor unions, liberal mayors, governors, the White House, the American Nazi and Communist parties, ACORN, Hollywood entertainers and a long list of supra-liberal and liberal groups” including a nonexistent “liberal media”? Maybe sky gods have different priorities than those who profess to be his earthly agents. Maybe gas wasn’t important to Him but liberal rabble will successfully catch his attention. Maybe?"

More at above link.

I thought some were claiming that the Occupy movement was "religious" or even "Christian" in nature.

3. Is that their idea of "action"? If they want OWS to go away, work to end poverty.
Not through prayer alone, but through action and support of policies that are just and fair.

Somehow, methinks that their idea of just and fair, however, does not extend beyond their own self interest. Their form of prayer is yet again nothing more than their personal wish list to the creator.

6. Ending poverty not their concern
Have any of these radical Christian groups actually done anything for anyone but themselves? They seem to spend more money on their own PR then they do emulating any actions of Christ.

19. Some of them seem to equate their God and Mammon
No wonder they're so preoccupied with having 'In God we trust' on coins.

4.  The expanded Wall Street Occupation is endorsed by... the American Nazi and Communist parties
Well, I am from the American Satanic party, and I endorse Family Research Council. Now dance, I or I will continue to endorse you!

5. What a great article. Thanks for posting
It points to a certain attitude that I'm writing about and the differences in types of people and places. On the west coast (Oregon) certain religious figures are going to bear witness against police brutality towards citizens and their rights and others who would demand there be no rights.

10. Thanks, I thought it was a fun almost funny read, even though
it's really depressing that the intent of their prayers is to stop free expression and the rights of people to protest in this nation.

I don't seem to recall any movement of Christians to pray away the Tea Bagger demonstrators, some of them carrying guns, many of them with equally misspelled signs as this missive from the FRC seems to have.

12. You could say that about any action the FRC takes on any issue! The mention of
O W S, in this release, is in contrast to what I understand Jesus to stand for.

9. Right Wing is often confused about the use of prayer, as they are on religion and other things.
You'd think after Christ said there'd be some He would say that He "never knew", they'd be more cautious.

13. OK, I'll bite, what is the correct "use of prayer"?
Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 05:20 PM by MarkCharles
To make the prayor feel better about himself and his sins? To make the prayor feel better about the sins of others? To wish for things or future events without doing any work for it, like a child wishes for a certain toy for Christmas from Santa Claus?

What is the correct use of praying? And what specifically does it accomplish?

14. The use of prayer
means that God can change his mind, but if he is omnipotent and infallible, does that mean he can't be wrong, and if he can't be wrong, why would prayer change his mind?

16. I had never thought of it in quite that way, but that DOES prayer begs the..
question about the omnipotence and infallibility of a god.

11. Imprecatory prayers. Nice.
FRC is apparently working to maintain, and even broaden, its Hate Group designation.

18. Ugh
As regards the Occupy movement - there are plenty of Christians and other religious people who support its principles. In the UK, this became relevant in particular because of the use of St Pauls Cathedral as a location. There are also the religious right, who hate anything that challenges the status quo, or even want a return to the 19th century or earlier.

At least at the times when they're trying to 'pray the whole thing away', they're not doing anything more effective to oppose it.
