Dublin archdiocese close to 'financial collapse'
The Catholic archdiocese of Dublin is close to a "state of financial collapse", according to a leaked consultation document from its Council of Priests.

The document blames a decrease in collections and declining participation at mass.

It also cites the cost of settlements made to clerical abuse victims.

--snip--

The document proposed the possibility of a parish based levy on Catholic families, which could raise up to 3m euros (£2.6m) a year.

A spokeswoman for the archdiocese confirmed the existence of the document. She said it was aimed at addressing the economic realities facing the archdiocese.

She said to make no changes would have serious financial consequence.

1. The only reason this will be a tragedy...
...is if they have no money left over to pay reparations to the peoples of the world for the misery and destruction they've visited on them in the name of their "imaginary friend."

"Opiate of the masses" indeed!

5. I'll join the string section...
:nopity:

So let's see, the Catholic church is the one true church when speaking of religious matters, but when we speak of financial matters, the one church becomes 500 or more entities, each insulated from the others as far as lawsuits and such are concerned. I'm sure that's what Jesus intended.

:sarcasm:

7. Surrounded by marble, gold, and fine art in Rome...
and they'll charge working class Irish to pay off their debts. Nice. Why don't more people leave this rotten, corrupt institution?

8. "O'Malley, I've come to collect the Catholic Family Levy"
"Oh, and what's that Father Ted?"

"It's a levy put on all Catholics in the Archdiocese to cover all the money paid out to those lost souls who accused of monks and nuns and priests of abuse and pederasty,"

"Is that all, Father Ted?"

"No, sad to say those good Catholic lawyers we hired to defend us seem to want some trifling amounts - just to cover expenses, of course,"

"And how much is this levy, Father Ted?"

"It's nothing, hardly worth mentioning in fact..."

"Well Father, perhaps you'd like to whisper it then,"

"If you don't mind then ..." Whis, whis-whis, whis

"Ah! ... I see, Father Ted. I'd better tell the wife about it might make a difference to the housekeeping," shouts "Aishwarya!"

"Err, O'Malley, I thought your wife was called Molly?"

"Not since we and the family became Buddhist, Father Ted ..."
