Actually, that's NOT in the Bible
http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/06/05/thats-not-in-the-bible/?iref=NS1

(CNN) – NFL legend Mike Ditka was giving a news conference one day after being fired as the coach of the Chicago Bears when he decided to quote the Bible.

These phantom passages include:

“God helps those who help themselves.”

“Spare the rod, spoil the child.”

1. Good article. It's amazing how so many people who freely toss "Biblical" quotes around
have clearly never read the thing.

2. You're right on the first citation but the second has roots in Proverbs 23:13-14
"He who spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes" (Proverbs 13:24) and "Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell." (Proverbs 23:13-14)

5. How many years ago was Ditka fired?
And what was the motivation in posting this today?

7. The article is new
Edited on Sun Jun-05-11 08:46 AM by JonLP24
OP probably came across it and decided to post it.

On edit-the article is less about Ditka, more about scriptures. I think they used Ditka as a famous example.

My motivation to post it was that this is a message board. Is today some special religious holiday?

that Ditka is being quoted from 1992.
Everyday is Saint Ditka day. Da Bears.

20. I think the author was using it as an example of a famous person
quoting the Bible incorrectly. Retrospective books and articles usually do that.

23. Plenty of search hits for people who explain that it isn't in the bible
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22God+helps+those+that+help+themselves%22+bible

though it's tough to find someone who actually make the claim themselves. I am surprised that anyone ever thought it was. The phrasing doesn't even sound biblical, let alone the sentiment.

8. Both liberal and conservative Christians do this.
They add things into the bible they wish were there, and remove/ignore the stuff they'd rather not think about.

12. That's a conflation that doesn't occur
in the Bible. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth occurs in Exodus 21.24, and just in case the message wasn't clear, it's repeated in Deuteronomy 19.21.

19. Ask and you shall receive
Edited on Sun Jun-05-11 12:44 PM by TexasProgresive
"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" Romans 12:19 KJV

16 Have the same regard for one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation.
17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil; be concerned for what is noble in the sight of all.
18 If possible, on your part, live at peace with all.
19 Beloved, do not look for revenge but leave room for the wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."
20 Rather, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head."
21 Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.Romans 12:17-21 NAB

Edited to add: My Dad would say, "Who's to say I'm not God's avenging angel?"

25. De 32:35 and Ps 94:1both speak of vengeance belonging to the Lord
in the Old Testament and are the closest to it there, Ro 12:19 '..., Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.' and Heb 10:30 '... Vengeance belongth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord.'... might be what you are looking for. Not a know it all but I can use a concordance.

24. Maybe we should be looking at what is in the Bible.
These are pertinent today:

And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. - Matt 19:24

And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him. - Mark 12:17

Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns. - Deuteronomy 24:14

I could go on and on to show how non-Christian this country is, but I will stop here.

27. This country is VERY CHRISTIAN.
They do all the cruel stuff that Jesus allegedly said in the N.T.

Condemning people to hell because they didn't like his preaching, running pigs off a cliff, saying that God's mass murdering of innocents in the O.T. is fine and dandy by him.

"Christian" is a meaningless label because the bible is a messy assemblage of random sayings not written when Jesus lived (If he lived AT ALL, historians say he did not exist) and recycled and rehashed from previous societies.

Every Christian I have ever known ignores all the bad-assed violence that Jesus condones. They act like it does not exist and like Jesus was always a nice guy. He was not.

Stupid, screwed up death cult religion.
