60% say it's wrong to celebrate OBL's death; 65% say he's in hell
Six-in-ten (62%) Americans agree it is wrong to celebrate the death of another human being, no matter how bad that person was. There is strong agreement across party and religious lines.

60% of Americans believe the Bible's admonition not to “rejoice when your enemies fall” applies to how Americans should react to bin Laden's death. There is strong agreement across party and religious lines.
•Nearly 7-in-10 (69%) of younger people (ages 18-34) believe this scripture passage applies to bin Laden, compared to only 47% of Americans age 65 and older.

-----

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans agree that bin Laden will be eternally punished for his sins in hell. There is also widespread agreement, although there are some differences in degree of agreement by religion.
•Eight-in-ten white evangelical Protestants agree, including 67% who completely agree that bin Laden will be eternally punished for his sins in Hell. Roughly two-thirds of Catholics and white mainline Protestants agree.
•Nearly half (49%) of the religiously unaffiliated agree that bin Laden will be eternally punished for his sins in Hell.

Interesting survey to say the least.

1. I neither celebrate nor mourn his death.
He is no more. He has met the fate all living things meet, and is disintegrating slowly at the bottom of the ocean. Osama bin Laden no longer exists. That is that.

Moving on, now...

2. How many think that Bush will go to Hell?
I think that more people think that G.W bush will go to hell than people who think that Bin Laden will go to Hell. After all, Bin Laden killed a few thousand people while Bush killed several hundred thousand people.

3. That is interesting. I would've expected less Americans to think celebrating OBL's death was wrong.
I don't think poorly of those who do celebrate OBL's death, I just thought the celebrations were more wide spread.

4. same here
I think some privately are horrified at the jubilation over his death but, out of a social fear, they keep quiet or even join in the celebration in order to fit in.

5. I think celebrating his death is in very poor taste....
And yet I celebrated for several days. Some people are just inconsistent that way.

6. How do those 65% know that bin Laden's version of Islam wasn't the 'right religion?'
Who's to say that his beliefs and actions weren't exactly in accord with what some omnipotent deity requires for an afterlife of eternal paradise?

7. People think atheism is all beer and skittles, but I can only
wish he was in hell. Not so fulfilling, is it?

9. That 65% is only wishing too.
It's just as likely that he'll be spending eternity in a peaceful cabin on the glens at the edge of the great Tootsie roll forest.

8. What's the difference between celebrating his death and thinking he's in Hell?
How can it be wrong to celebrate his death but simultaneously think he is in Hell? Religion confuses me iven all of the rules, exceptions, special cases, hypocrises and nonsensical belief system that is applied too arbitrarilty.

10. I don't see the connection...
...let's say I'm a religious person.
It has just been announced that Usama Bin Laden has just been killed.
I don't celebrate the death but when asked if I think he went to Hell upon his death
I say 'yes' based on the evil he committed while alive.

...I'm just stating where he goes after death.

13. That's why it's the ultimate gravedance. You get to do it while claiming you're not.

15. You can make all the googly-eyes you want, but once you understand
that the concept of hell is an indoctrinated method of catharsis, you'll see what I mean. Anyone who engages in the belief that someone else is in hell, regardless of whether they do so gleefully or not, is engaging in the ultimate gravedance.

18. I'm not sure what makes you so cocksure
that you know what is going on in other peoples heads, but you're wrong.
For example, my mother in law is sure that I'm going to hell because I'm an atheist.
But I KNOW she isn't happy about it. It's just what she's been taught at church.
