Pope's organs are too holy to donate to mortals, says Church

By Michael Day in Venice

Saturday, 5 February 2011

Benedict XVI has tried to scotch rumours that he carries an organ donor card after his secretary revealed that his ascension to the position of Holy Father means he is no longer able to bequeath his body parts to lesser mortals.

On the pontiff's instructions, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, Benedict's personal secretary, fired off a letter to quell the rumours that started in the Pope's native Germany.

"It's true that a simple cardinal can have an organ donor card but, despite public declarations to the contrary, it ceased to apply when he was elected head of the Catholic Church," Mgr Gaenswein said.

25. Nope, not true.

You Are Never Too Old

No one is too old or too young. Both newborns and senior citizens have been organ donors. The condition of your organs is more important than age. Someone 35 years old with a history of alcohol abuse may have a liver that is in worse condition than someone 60 years old who has never consumed alcohol. In addition, people on the waiting list might need to be transplanted with an organ that is less than ideal if there is no other suitable organ available in time to save their lives. Doctors will examine your organs and determine whether they are suitable for donation if the situation arises. If you are under 18, you will need the permission of a parent or guardian to donate.

6. VD, AIDS, what are they hiding?
So one old man can't donate. He is a sorry lot. There are many important things we could discuss about him but organ donation is not one of them.

9. How about donating to a medical school, for science?
Edited on Sat Feb-05-11 10:44 AM by DinahMoeHum
I've heard stories about doctors stipulating this in their wills; that their corpses/organs be donated to their alma maters for that purpose.

10. I don't remember ever reading about
a young and healthy Pope. Maybe they had one in the Middle Ages or in the very early history of the church. I think most of their organs are used up by the time that they die.

12. I think he meant the Pope's organs
Not his organs, but the organs. You know, the musical instruments. He has a huge organ collection. And he can't donate those. The idea that the pope would be carrying out a card to donate his organs after he dies is bizarre. The pope's organs title is passed on to the new pope, who gets to play them. Or he gets people to play with them if he can't. Organ music is a big thing in the Catholic church. They play their organs all the time during ceremonies, and so on and so forth.

11. For Sale: One penis, slightly used
Low, low mileage. Looks like new. Never used in women. Stroked only when deemed necessary and never to ejaculation.

Serious inquiries only.

13. I guess the Pope thinks he is better than Jesus or something
At least in my Bible, Jesus offered up his blood and body to his homies at some dinner they were having.

"Don't be a dope
by thinking there's hope
you ain't gettin' shit
from the motherfuckin' Pope!"
Rappin' Jesus

21. Maybe dead Pope meat is meant to be eaten, just like dead Jesus meat
Considering the church's dogma regarding "transubstantiation", I can't see any reasons left to be so picky about the post mortem disposition of the Vicar's viscera.

27. How bizarre
Surely according to Christian doctrine the soul leaves the body behind, so that his body would have no special religious value after death? I know that some sects have trouble with organ donation at all, but if you're OK with it in general, why would it depend on a person's 'holiness' or earthly position? But I admit that I'm no theologian.
