... He acknowledged that whatever the agendas of the news reports (he believes they deliberately failed to explore canonical law procedures showing Pope Benedict’s innocence), the stories have done the church a favor by spotlighting that its own failures are the principal problem.

“The real issue is not that the New York Times can get a story wrong,” he said. “The real issue is that the church had members who first, harmed the young, (and) second, had other members that didn’t do all that they could do prevent it.”

The church is not being falsely accused of evil, it’s being reminded of the evil it did, he said.

“In this sense, journalism in general has done the church a huge favor, to allow us not to escape the evil that was done,” he said ...
