Vatican To Get Own YouTube Channel
Vatican To Get Own YouTube Channel

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican will soon have its own channel on the video sharing site YouTube where the Catholic faithful or the curious will be able to see Pope Benedict or Church events, a Vatican source said on Saturday.

The details of the accord are due to be presented on Friday at a news conference attended by Vatican officials as well as Henrique de Castro, managing director of media solutions for Google, which owns YouTube.

The initiative will involve Google, the Vatican Television Center and Vatican Radio. It will mark the Vatican's deepest plunge into new media. The Vatican opened up its website, www.vatican.va, in 1995.

- Oh yeah, right. This should work out just fine.

I can't wait to see the comments......

2. Yep. Those comments will be priceless.
I like that they felt the need to officially announce it too. I heard the trumpetary fanfare as I read the announcement. (Too much Monty Python in my youth)

5. Not to mention the "improvements" that'll be....
...made to the videos themselves.

10. How true.
They might be able to enforce copyright on Youtube, but once something's out on the web it's there forever.

And parody is protected by law, at least in the U.S.

3. If they don't have comments turned off from the beginning
it won't be long until they do.

7. That would be the wise thing to do....
...but then again, this is the Vatican we're talking about. And I've found that religion and wisdom tends to be mutually exclusive.

9. Ooh, they're gonna hate it
They can't make it like one-way TeeVee, as much as they'd like to. They can lock down the comments, but can't control the tagging. Like it or not, the Pope Show is going to be living cheek to jowl with its worst detractors in the Related sidebar and searches. Ratzinger won't be able to so much as belch without critical response videos immediately crowding his space.

12. Yeah, it'll be fun
Mashups, remixes, and late-night Vatican meetings: "Who is Pat Condell, why won't he go away, and why does he get more hits than the Holy Father?!"
