POPE: ASTONISHMENT AND ANXIETY FOR RESPONSIBILITY

(AGI) - Vatican City, Apr. 27 - At the beginning of his pontificate Pope Benedict XVI continues to state he is emotionally involved. This is what he declared in front of the masses arrived on Saint Peter's Square for his first general audience, repeating what he already said one week ago to cardinals in the Sistine Chapel celebrating his election. "On my mind there are contrasting emotions: astonishment and gratitude towards the Lord who surprised above all myself, when he called me to be the successor of Peter and anxiety for the enormous task and responsibility conferred on me". But joy and peace of mind come from "the certainty that the Lord will guide me" as well as "from the spiritual closeness of the faithful, whom last Sunday I asked to accompany me with their prayers".

4. Is this Pope
overly involved in self? Isn't that a sin? I thought the Cardinals chose him.

Curious

11. Where's Goebbels when Pope Ratso Pius XIII needs him?
He could always call the Commander-in-Chimp and ask to borrow Karl Röve...

9. He really needs to stop saying that. Its just starting to sound dumb now.
That election was politics just like any other. I might have believed initially he was surprised and a bit overwhelmed, but come on. Now he's just sounding silly.

Well, maybe he doesn't become infallible until after he actually puts the hat on.
