Is this true about Seventh Day Adventists??
I've observed that they don't use black pepper as a condiment. What's going on here? Is black pepper a 'gateway' condiment to more harsh seasonings? Are salsa or tabasco allowed?

1. I Haven't Heard Much About It
but I know some older religions didn't use certain condiments because they thought that the followers should be "plain" and not indulge in certain things that could be seen as indulgent or invoke certain "passions". But I don't know about the modern sect.

<snip>So-called "hot" spices and condiments, specifically chili pepper and black pepper and aged cheeses (Limburger and Roquefort) also are discouraged by Seventh Day Adventists.

4. Any religion which rejects Limburger cheese
shows signs of some clear thinking.

6. This goes back to Ellen White, one of the 7th Day founders.
She focused on "health reform," and she believed that black pepper was/is quite irritating to the stomach lining and can cause ulcers. Vinegar, horseradish, sharp cheese and mustards were also discouraged by her.

It is not without reason that 7th Day food is synonymous with bland.

8. Thanks. I will say, that while the food is boring, I've rarely met an
oveweight 7th Dayer. But pepper seems a little 'over the edge'.

9. Don't we all draw the line SOMEWHERE?
Are folks here saying that our more mainstream comfort zones are somehow superior to theirs?

10. And to think that the Branch Davidians thought LDSs were too liberal...
So they "branched" off.

I find this black pepper thing hilarious!

11. I doubt this has anything to do with it,
but I read by leading colon health doctor that black pepper is very irritating to the colon. However, I've never read it anywhere else.

12. I'm not Adventist, but I live in Adventist territory
They have their own market, which up until recently did not carry pepper (or other hot spices), mustard (made with wine, you know), coffee, caffinated tea, meat or fish and certainly not alcohol.

The times, they are a'changin'. I went into the store about a month ago to find them serving freshly brewed coffee... with caffine. I nearly fainted. I bought a cup just to prove I could. Gotta tell ya, though, they need some lessons in how to make coffee.

They included mustard, pepper and other spices on their shelves some time before that. And yes, they are generally not overweight, but a good many of them have very bad skin--it's all the candy and sweets they eat and the fake crap made to taste like meat, is what I figure.
