Live Action Movie Review - The Book of Eli
Edited on Thu Jan-20-11 03:26 PM by ZombieHorde
Country of origin: USA

Year: 2010

Genre: Post-apocalyptic future/Tough guy/Christian

Story: Denzel Washington has the last Holy Bible, and Gary Oldman wants it bad, but Denzel Washington's faith in The Lord makes him a bad-ass killing machine. I am not kidding.

Acting: Average

Humor: No intentional humor.

Violence: Denzel Washington stabs a lot of people. There is some blurred distant rape.

Sex: No nudity or sex scenes.

Overall: The Book of Eli looks a lot like the video game Fallout, a hybrid of cowboy and leather biker aesthetics. I really like Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman, but their roles in this movie were stereotypical, so they never got much of a chance to shine. This movie does manage to avoid one-liners, and I don't remember too many explosions, so the action movie cliches are minimized. Fallout fans and mindless action movie fans should enjoy this, conservative Christians who like action movies will probably love it, others will probably think, "meh." I thought it was OK, but I love violent action movies and Fallout.

1. I liked it - the ending was good.

But, then I love anything Denzel is in. What pissed me off is that he made so many great movies and they gave him the Oscar for portraying a crooked cop- 'Training Day'.

Off the top of my head, John Q, Macolhm X, Philadelphia, The Pelican Brief. Maybe not Oscar material but, Missippis Masala, Mighty Quin, Devil in a Blue Dress were really good.

2. Not to mention "Much Ado About Nothing". I love Denzel too. Book of Eli was
fine.

3. Seriously, John Q?
I thought it was horrible. The acting was atrocious across the board. I like Denzel fine, but this was a horrible picture. Didn't like Eli, either. Sorry.

4. Yes, John Q
maybe my emotional view of the film clouded my critical eye. Not really a critic - I watch movies to be entertained and in some cases - not many - informed. I can always use bits and pieces from movies to further my knowledge if interested.

I think movies push people to be a little more curious about certain subjects.

Another fav that I watch all the time because of the subject matter and timeliness is 'The Siege', especially because it was made before 9/11. Unsettling.
