1
'The Big Lebowski' (1998)
Peter Travers

Like you thought I'd say anything else. All hail the Dude, played by Bridges in a performance that belongs in the acting time capsule, despite the cruel fact that he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar that year. Roberto Benigni won for the hateful Life Is Beautiful. Shame and double shame. The ponytailed, pot-bellied, pot-smoking Dude, real name Jeff Lebowski, mostly bowls with his buddies Walter (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi) and sometimes Jesus (an unmissable John Turturro), a pervert in a hairnet. Then the Dude is mistaken for a gangster, also named Lebowski, and his adventures begin. Priceless moment: A hood pees on the Dude's rug, forcing its removal and saddening the Dude no end: "That rug really tied the room together."

1. I would have squeezed 'Tucker: The Man and His Dream' into this list.
They should have dropped 'True Grit' because most have not even seen it yet.

3. I love him in everything I have ever seen him in.
K-PAK, Jagged Edge, among some greats not on the list...
I could not choose only one, altho I know The Big Lebowski is the cult favorite.

4. Jeff Bridges is wonderful in everything.
I can't pick a favorite. I was so glad he won an Oscar this year. Crazy Heart was a very touching movie.

7. I think a lot of people woke up and realized how great he has been.
He's one of those actors who makes a role look so natural that people think he's just reacting instead of acting, but then you compare roles, like The Big Lebowski to Seabiscuit to Crazy Heart, and you start to realize how much range he really has. It hit me a few years ago when I was watching Seabiscuit and my daughter asked what else he had been in. I said "The Big Lebowski," then said "No, wait, that wasn't him. Wait, yes it was." Then I realized how completely disconnected those two roles were to each other, and how few actors could pull off two such different roles so well. DeNiro can't, Depp can't. Pacino can, Geoffrey Rush can... But the list is pretty darned short.

11. I actuallly -disliked- The Big Lebowski when I first saw it.
It's of course grown on me since...

"The Fisher King" is so damn good too.

12. Yeah, same here...I don't think I made it all the way through the first viewing
Timing is everything, I guess. I finally relented after years of people talking about what a classic it was, and seeing the "Lebowski Fest" Website and such. I think it was the Rolling Stone interview a few months back with Bridges that made me say "What the hell" and order it from NetFlix. Since then I've only watched it 30 or 40 times.

:-)

15. It was all the DUers who love The Big Lebowski that made me finally watch it.
Now it's one of my all-time favorites.
