Hilton arrested for alleged cocaine possession
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Paris Hilton was released from a Las Vegas, Nevada, jail Saturday morning after being arrested late the night before on suspicion of cocaine possession, police said Saturday.

The hotel heiress was riding in a black Cadillac Escalade which was pulled over in front of the Wynn Hotel on the Vegas strip at about 11:30 p.m. after police detected the smell of marijuana coming from the SUV, Lt. Wayne Holman told CNN.

The driver, who police did not identify, was arrested for driving under the influence, he said.

Hilton was taken to the Clark County jail. She was released after authorities determined she was not a flight risk, Holman said.

I feel sorry for her but maybe I shouldn't. Let's see if the criminal justice system treats her the same as a black teenager caught with a little coke.

1. A black teenager would not have been released so soon
So the criminal justice system is already treating Paris differently.

Actually, I don't see any harm in her possessing cocaine. Damn stuff should just be legalized, along with marijuana. It'd make a lot of so-called crimes disappear.

3. I don't feel sorry for her.
This two tiered justice system has to go! Personally I would have no problem with her being made an example of, but the reality is she'll get that pass that free pass again.

While the black teenager would be sitting in jail even now.

19. Not if it was a rich black teenager
Edited on Sat Aug-28-10 10:44 AM by bloomington-lib
It's rich and famous vs not rich, not white vs black. I once spent six days in jail for drinking at a party when I was 19. The judge said he wanted to make an example of me and told me he's sure he has not seen the last of me...for underage drinking at a PARTY! Do you think because someone's white the police just pats them on the back and drives them home?

21. That's a good point.
While race does play a role, I believe it's more about who has the money to bail themselves out, who can afford an expensive lawyer, and how well connected their family is.

5. That was my initial reaction, but there is potential here for making this
a centerpiece of the two-tier justice system. I'd love to see an ad campaign comparing Paris to a young black man from any East Coast city.

9. Paris Hilton has to be one of the most useless people to
walk the face of the planet. Her opportunities for education and a career are unlimited. She could assist many charities with her deep pockets. Instead she wastes her time on "reality" tv shows, jet setting around, and apparently doing drugs. The "justice" system is doing her no favors with the preferential treatment - though I expect nothing less.

11. Oh, she's going to walk from that.
"Suspicion" of cocaine possession? Correct me if I'm wrong but that likely means that only traces of cocaine were found. Combine that with a tenuously connected probable cause (the driver supposedly smoking dope), and half a dozen top-shelf criminal defense lawyers on retainer who are no doubt already gumming up the local legal system with paperwork, discovery requests, changes of venue, requests for continuances and dismissals, background checks on all officers involved, and so on, and she'll be cleared by the end of next week.

12. The drug war is like the military
You know how Rangel wanted to reinstate the draft as an illustration of how it's now a de facto poverty draft? Same with the drug war. The only way it'll ever get stopped is if rich white people are treated the same way brown people are treated.

However, I think coke is a helluva drug, as they say. If legalized, it should still be controlled heavily, along with heroin. (Meth should never be legalized. Does that sound reactionary? I hope not)

.......unless there would be some "mythical" way of making either NOT addictive & dangerous. I personally don't give a fuck if someone were to overdose on their own, I don't want innocents involved in fights, guns, or any other abuses.

In any case, meth should not be legal... even the manufacturing of it is dangerous.

41. The "medical benefit" is not an argument when advocating..............
.....recreational drug use, which I think is one of the points of this post. Marijuana is my "drug of choice" besides "beer" and I don't like or advocate the "medical benefit" back door of defense. There are a zillion other reasons (and the medical benefit is one) why it SHOULD NOT be illegal. I'll agree also about cocaine (although, I have some reservations), but Heroin or Meth should, IMO, remain illegal for RECREATIONAL USE.

36. Posted this in the lounge thread about this;but better to post this here about our idiotic drug laws
4. Prohibition and the "war on drugs" is insane, and I no more revel in the arrest of Paris Hilton

than in the arrest of anyone for putting whatever substance they choose into their own bodies. I am not , by the way, suggesting that the OP ( on edit--this and the lounge OP) is "reveling" in her arrest, but I'm sure that somewhere, many people are. Whatever anyone thinks of Paris Hilton, or of other obscenely wealthy celebrities who stupidly (in my opinion anyway, and that's from experience many , many years ago)) and self-destructively (again just my opinion and experience) use cocaine, she in this case is a victim of this nonsensical and hypocritical set of laws as much as any poor person who gets busted. She, like them, may be a fool, but is not , or at least should not be made to be, a criminal because of it.

.

So what gets more attention, a chemical leak at the MGM Grand that sent 12 to the hospital, or a dimwitted celebrity's possession of cocaine and her boyfriend's alleged DUI?

My guess: (putting my tinfoil hat on) is that the MGM Grand management didn't want to ruin the hotel's reputation and decided to plant the coke on Hilton's person.
