Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary

From The Hollywood Reporter.

"Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. - The new film is shooting for a 2012 release."

9. I dunno..
I thought "You're standing in it." was a pretty good line..

Of course I waited through the whole damn movie to hear Blue Oyster Cult..

History shows again and again

how nature points out the folly of men

2. a 2012 release
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 06:39 AM by ixion
I can see the tagline now.

And as the other poster mentioned, it'll be relatively easy for them to top the last attempt, which had a good cast, but suffered from a really lame narrative.

4. The other U.S. made Godzilla movie was my least favorite of the bunch.
I hope this one is better.

5. This won't be the American Godzilla.
It'll be the Japanese Godzilla, just made by an American company. One of the executive producers is Yoshimitsu Banno, who directed G vs Hedorah way back in '71 (the weirdest of them all, by far). Legendary Pictures sounds like they know why the American Godzilla was received the way it was by the fans, and I suspect they won't repeat the mistakes of Emmerich.

I hope.

7. Godzilla vs Hedorah is one of my favorites.
One of my old roommates knew I loved that movie so he recorded all of the audio onto cassette tape for me. If I remember correctly, the version he recorded was called Godzilla versus the Smog Monster.

Animals, God's animals
Don't go away, don't go
Flowers, my flowers
Don't go away, don't go
The sea has cobalt, it's full of mercury
Too many fumes in our oxygen
All the smog now is choking you and me
Good Lord, where is it gonna end?
Got to get it back, someday
Got to get it back, and soon now
For tomorrow maybe you and me
We're movin', we're movin', movin' to the Moon now
It's up to us to make a choice
We know what it's worth to save the Earth
Come raise your voice
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)
See the evil problem around us
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)
And the Solution: stop pollution
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)
Save the Earth!
And the Solution: to stop pollution
Save the Earth!
Save the Earth!
Save the Earth!

One interesting tidbit on that movie. Tomoyuki Tanaka, the co-creator of Godzilla and producer of all the Godzilla movies until his death in '97, was in the hospital during the production of The Smog Monster. When he saw the finished film he was mortified (especially the Godzilla flying scene, I would imagine), and accused the director Banno of ruining the character. Banno was going to do another movie with Godzilla in Africa somewhere, but they never let him do it.

A few years back there were attempts to do a 3D G movie, and Banno was one of the players behind that as well.

17. The whole movie is fantastic.
The music, the weirdness, the blatant pro-environmental message, and of course the giant monster fights.

This has actually been one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood, but it's great to see it made official.

10. I'd love to see big-budget remake of Godzilla King of the Monsters

True to the heart of the original and with the best of both worlds when it comes to "guy in suit" and CG Godzilla effects.

15. I'll be surprised if it's not all CGI for Godzilla.
Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 12:33 PM by Forkboy
They might still use miniatures here and there (like they did in GINO), but I'm not betting on a lot of suit work, if any. I have mixed feelings about giving up the tradition of the suit, but I think they've really taken it as far as it can go. It's very limiting on how scenes can be shot, and CGI gives the chance to do much more dynamic shots and angles. Toho never wanted to spend the money needed to do CGI right, and now they won't have to.

All in all, I'm nervous, but confident that it'll be much better than GINO was. I'm hoping the makers of it all sit around watching the original and GMK a LOT! :)

16. "GINO" That's funny.

I wouldn't mind if they did do a complete CG Zilla as long as they did top notch cg like Cloverfield. I agree with your hopes of the film makers being inspired by GKOTM and GMK. I loved Godzilla's "Destroyer God" design for GMK.

20. Is this the new design?
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 04:32 AM by Forkboy

Rumor has it that this is a leaked photo of the design. Probably just rumor, but I've never seen this pic before (and I literally have hundreds of them saved lol), and if so it's an interesting take. I'd make the head slightly bigger and ditch a bit of the fin effect coming off his face, but at least it's clearly Godzilla.

Waiting to see the new suit (or in this case, CGI) design for each G movie is one of the best things about them. :)

22. Very cool. It's kinda' saurian or crocodile-like.
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 01:02 AM by AllenVanAllen

It reminds me a bit of Space Godzilla. The angle of the neck suggests a more dinosaur like stance to the body. The 2002 suit design was originally more hunched over like a T-Rex.

I'd like to see something like this re-envisioned 54':

More pix: http://darake.exblog.jp

I'm sure I'll grow to love whatever they do come up with. I love Godzilla in all his forms. :)

Some awesome shit there!

I love the skinnier look of that pic, and the others (a la Godzilla Raids Again). That guy has a great vision of what G could look like! Kind of a mix of all the best G suits rolled into one. Awesome stuff! Thanks!
