2. Barsoom!
if it's not rated at least R (should be NC17) I'll be very disappointed.

3. It's a Disney production.

I'm guessing they'll try to keep it PG.

4. PC to
The big complaint about John Carter and even more so Tarzan is that you have the white European type able to enter the culture and military system of another society and totally kick butt. Reeks of 19th century colonialism. On the flip side Edgar Rice Burroughs was my all time favorite author growing up, and I read virtually all of his works. You could also argue that both John Carter and John Clayton (Tarzan) respected the cultures which they found and tried to live within them to the best of their abilities.

As an adult I find movies like the "The Last Samarai" insulting. How could someone who came up in the European system of the 19th century using limited swordsmanship be able to compete with highly trained Samurai who probably reached the pinacle of swordsmanship?

Of course John Carter had the advantage of his earth muscles from the heavier gravity.

Looking forward to the movie even a PG Disney version. Its violence will probably be on the level of Lord of the Rings or Narnia.

You're probably right. I hope director Andrew Stanton can find a happy medium between what the studio wants and still stay faithful to the source material.

6. It's a "live-action" movie.

Here's a list of some of the actors tapped to star:

The stellar ensemble cast is led by Taylor Kitsch (NBC’S “Friday Night Lights”, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) in the title role, Lynn Collins (“50 First Dates,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) as the warrior princess Dejah Thoris and Oscar® nominee Willem Dafoe (“Spider-Man 3,” “Shadow of a Vampire”) as Martian inhabitant Tars Tarkas. The cast also includes Thomas Haden Church (“Sideways,” Spider-Man 3), Polly Walker (upcoming “Clash of the Titans,” “Patriot Games”), Samantha Morton (“Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” “In America”), Mark Strong (“Sherlock Holmes,” “Body of Lies”), Ciaran Hinds (“Munich,” “There Will Be Blood”), British actor Dominic West (“300,” “Chicago”), James Purefoy (“Vanity Fair,” “Resident Evil”) and Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”). Daryl Sabara (“Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” “Spy Kids”) takes the role of John Carter’s teenaged nephew, Edgar Rice Burroughs.

8. Great cast!
I loved the books as a kid, although I remember it as "John Carter WARLORD of Mars" or am I thinking of the comic book?

9. It was the name of the Marvel comic

and Warlord of Mars was the third book in the Martian series.

10. I really really want this to be as good as it should be.
I read these when I was very young, even before I read The Hobbit and LOTR.

Just the thought of John Carter, the greatest swordsman on two worlds, fighting back-to-back with Tars Tarkas against the Warhoon hordes gives me goosebumps.

13. Wasn't aware this was in the works - Thanks
Also thanks for the Frank Frazetta artwork. I read and enjoyed most of the series many years ago (Chessmen of Mars, Mastermind of Mars, etc.)
Did an image search for Lynn Collins. What a beauty! Lucky John Carter!

14. She is a beauty! She should make a fine Deja.

Even though she'll probably be more clothed than her literary counterpart.
Now all we have to do now is wait for 2012!

15. The people I know who are working on it still kind of think that it'll be a miracle
if it makes it on screen. There's been so many false starts in the past and a green light doesn't always signal a film in theaters in the end. Still, here's hoping!

Originally Hugh Jackman was slated to play John Carter.

Oh, and the painting used in the article has nothing to do with the film. In fact, another couple of friends did it last year as a private commission: http://imaginistix.blogspot.com/2008/12/john-carter-of-mars_28.html

I think Hugh Jackman could've pulled off Carter but I'm glad they're going with a younger actor.

This is an excellent piece. Their styles are unmistakable! Friends with Boris & Julie, how cool is that?

:hi:

17. Two of the kindest people you could ever hope to know
as are Julie's sons, David and Tony (that's Tony as John Carter in the painting). Staunch liberals too. Julie has really helped me to get some of my health issues under control, and they are both endlessly encouraging when I struggle with oils. I know that they sometimes get some harsh criticisms for their work, but it never bothers them a bit. They love what they do, and that's what counts!

19. I heard they were really nice people.

A friend of mine got the rights from Boris to turn three of his paintings, Primeval Princess, Amazon's Pet and my favorite, Vampire's Kiss into resin model kits. He said they were both really cool people to work with.

I really got big kick out of their Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie poster. I have one in my studio.

I think they've done excellent work.

20. Lol! The original is hanging in their breakfast room
it's one of their recent favorites too. I stumbled across the reference photos in their studio and had to ask "what the heck are these for?" so they posted them on their blog. Funny stuff: http://imaginistix.blogspot.com/2008/10/we-thought-you-would-get-kick-out-of.html

The resin kits really came out beautifully. Congrats to your friend!

That's great! That piece makes me smile every time I look at it! I'm glad they used models for the faces. The expressions are priceless! I'm glad they shared the reference with the fans too.

Steve is an amazing sculptor. I love his work.
