Michael Jackson Returns to Disney's Big Screen

Libby Zay
Disneyland just announced the return of Captain EO, a 3-D movie starring Michael Jackson that was originally released more than 23 years ago.

Beginning February 2010, the 1980's era sci-fi fantasy film will be screened at Tomorrowland "for an exclusive, limited engagement," a Disney blog post by media representative Heather Hust Rivera revealed.

The film stars Michael Jackson as a singing and dancing ship captain on a mission to deliver a musical gift to an evil alien witch queen, played by Anjelica Huston.

Directed by The Godfather's Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas of Star Wars fame, the film has a run time of only 17 minutes and cost an estimated $30 million—making it the most expensive motion picture of all time minute-for-minute, according to The Internet Movie Database.

1. There's been a lot of discussion about it on the Disney fan sites.
Right after Michael Jackson's death there was a lot of talk about bringing "Captain EO" back to replace "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience" which has been playing in the same theater for quite a few years now. The company was initially reluctant to bring back EO because of the controversy surrounding Jackson's personal life. Apparently they have now decided it's OK. Many Disney fans and visitors are too young to have seen the film when it ran in 3-D at Disney parks starting in 1986 and ending in either 1997 or 1998 depending on which park. Speculation on how long it will run at Disneyland is currently a topic of discussion. I think it will all depend on attendance, if attendance falls off they will probably replace it with something else. I saw it once in the late 1980s and it was pretty good with the 3-D effects, though Michael Jackson did not really make a convincing superhero, in my opinion.

4. I agree, a non-convincing hero he was. it was cute in parts. Honey, I Shrunk, is painful, to me.

2. This is the 2nd idea I had that they wound up enacting.
I've been saying for a while that they should redo Star Tours. Lo and behold, they're working on it now.

I'm very proud of myself.

5. Hmm...will it show at Disney World as well?
I'm taking the family there in February over the President's Day week.

7. don't think so.
for some reason, it appears they wanna just do this at Disneyland. I have my opinions why, but regardless, have a great time, and check out the Hall of Presidents, it is a really great revamped show with Morgan Freeman hosting, 'Abe', and Obama speaking primarily - well worth the viewing.
