Michael Vick lands own TV show on BET
Source: MSNBC

What do you get when you add an arrest for running a dogfighting ring to a recently completed 18-month prison term? If you’re infamous quarterback Michael Vick, you get a deal for an eight-part television series on BET.

The tentatively titled “Michael Vick Project,” a “docu-series,” not a reality show per se, will spotlight his comeback with the Philadelphia Eagles and also delve into his back story, from his difficult childhood to his 2007 arrest for running a dog-fighting ring, according to the L.A. Times.

Vick was released from prison in May, and several months is enough time to put together a television deal. However, if the cameras have extensive coverage of the hours and days immediately following his prison release, it does makes you wonder if he was negotiating a deal from behind bars.

Regardless of how the “Project” came together, it doesn’t sound like PETA members will be setting their DVRs when it airs.

“People who abuse animals don't deserve to be rewarded,” said PETA spokesman Dan Shannon. “They shouldn't be given multimillion-dollar contracts ... or given the privilege of being a role model.” ....

He should write a "how to be a success" book.

23. The reason this works is that there is a large segment of the population that would essentially be
complicit with dog fighting. A lot of people simply don't care.

27. What's the problem?
Could be a good thing if handled well. Could be pointing out where his mistakes in life almost cost him everything and help keep others from making the same mistakes.

or it could be utter garbage...

I'll reserve my judgment till I see it.

29. I agree
He's served his time and all indications are that he has been rehabilitated and is committed to helping to use his second chance to help right the wrongs he has committed. I found an interesting article from a couple of months ago: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-streeter16-2009aug16,0,4735769.column

The Humane Society has actually lost members because of their decision to associate with him but I find the decision quite admirable. I don't think that turning our backs on Michael Vick would be sending the right message. I remember sitting on a bus one day and hearing a 20-something guy talking to a female friend about living with a bunch of roommates and taking in a stray cat who they ended up completely neglecting, not feeding, not cleaning out the litter box and simply watched as it became delirious due to starvation and eventually died. Sadly, there are way too many people who have this kind of attitude towards animals but most of these people are never punished for their cruelty because no one knows or cares. In Michael Vick's case, he has been punished and is now in a position where he can do good and educate others. I'm willing to give him that chance. If it takes a reality tv series to help him to reconnect with people, then so be it. Ultimately, he can do a lot of good.

That's a step up, however small people think it is, from those who dodge any responsibility for what they do.
