Nurse Jackie: What do you think of the first episode of this new show?
On Showtime.

Sick, warped and it definitely had some good lines in it. Real nurses are upset that Nurse Jackie does drugs.

1. It's more dark than funny
But I liked it. Considering the fare that is on ordinary network television, and cable in general, I love Showtime series'. The first Weeds of this, I believe, last season was good too.

I think I was expecting it to be funnier. As far as the doing drugs, I think it wasn't so recreational, as much as for a bad back. I can totally sympathize, as my back has flared up a few times in my life, and the pain will keep you from functioning. She did a good job with dragging her leg a few times, as that is kind of what it does, keeps you from moving in certain ways.

One other comment--it was nice to have a show where the doctors and nurses weren't all pulled in straight from a beauty pageant. While ER had a few ordinary looking people, seriously, what hospital have you ever been in, or courtroom for law shows, where all the folks are bright, good-looking, and well-groomed. There's your fiction.

I'll definitely watch it again, if for nothing else, to cut down on my Blockbuster bill.

2. In my entire career of nursing
I have never forged an organ donation form, flushed a body part or snorted oxycontin. I have been sort of rude to new nurses as the more recent crops think they know everything and don't take direction well. I have also never done the dirty with the pharm guy or anyone else in the workplace. Also, we don't get enough time to leave for lunch, mostly just don't get lunch breaks at all.

I have ducked the supervisor (man, were they ever on target with that woman), told a resident off, and made suggestions that were blown off to the patient's detriment.

I can understand about the back injury though, and I don't believe she is diverting drugs from patients. Some that I have worked with are taking the same exact pain killers for bad backs. I worked with one nurse who diverted big time and when she was finally arrested she was found with a morphine bag in her bra, connected to an iv in her arm, two fentanyl patches on and scads of oxycontin in her pockets. She was stealing and selling as well and had become very blatant. I think she was also charged with identity theft as she had stolen some passwords of other staff to access the meds from the pyxis.

As far as the show goes, it was interesting and I liked that it wasn't all "saint nursey" or so doctorcentric and actually featured people who work on a hospital floor besides doctors like the pharm tech, the nursing supervisor. I also liked that they had the character, an ED nurse, actually work in the ED and not everywhere else in the hospital. She is a trauma nurse (not OB, not psych, not oncology, not surgical). And, she displays the ED nurse attitude.

3. I like the show.
Edie Falco is a good actress, I liked her in The Sopranos and she's good in Nurse Jackie as well.

Did anyone pick up on the fact that the pharmacist is played by Paul Schulze, who also played the Father who was attracted to Mrs. Soprano?

The ending of the show was a surprise, I didn't see that coming. Someone else in the room had just said, "I wonder who takes care of the kids while she works these long shifts?" Now we know. ;)

4. Second that. She's a terrific actress.
The British doctor is a hoot. Dr. 'Coop' grabbing her boob was just too much. I will enjoy this series.

5. I liked it.
Between this show and my total love of Dexter, I might have to break down and subscribe to Showtime.

6. I TiVo'd it and watched it last night
I liked it quite a bit and look forward to the rest of this season, and next season (it's already been renewed).

Nurse Jackie is a flawed woman, obviously more flawed than most of us because of the need for story lines on TV, and I'm alternately revolted by her, and yet drawn to her humanity and need for justice. Edie Falco is wonderful in the role

The ending was a bit of a surprise.

My mother hadn't added it to her TiVo yet, by the end of the night, it was added to hers as well.

7. I don't have cable, but I just wondered if others on here saw the billboard
for the show: "In life there are a lot of little pricks" with the nurse holding a needle. It's funny because I am no prude, but I just felt it was very uncouth to have a large sign like that plastered all over town.
