WTF? History Channel Goes Woo-Woo: Full Weeks Of Bible/End Times Shows in Jan.
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 12:54 AM by stopbush
Are they kidding me? They've totally embraced the woo-woo, as James Randi calls it. Their promos for new shows in January include "Armageddon Week" and a nightly series on "The 7 Deadly Sins." Worse, they've picked up a bunch of religious advertisers. "Would you know if Jesus or The Buddha returned? Watch for a star in the heavens that burns day and night." Plus, it looks like they have something coming about how "all religions" believe in the end of the world, and how the Mayans predicted the end to be in 2012.

Couple that with their standard woo-fare like "UFO Hunters" and "Monster Quest." Is there any real HISTORY left in their programming?

WTF?? It's like they're turning into the "Fears, Myths and Idiocies" channel.

BTW - saw all of this during their Band of Brothers marathon today. BoB is one of THE great HISTORICAL mini-series ever produced. Hard to believe THC had a hand in it, considering the shit they're promoting these days.

1. I know. Our cable just added more Religious programs/channels.
I am really sick of this crap. It is turning me into a less spiritual person.

2. What do you mean? They have been doing that for years...
I always thought maybe it would be a good idea if they hired some actual historians for that channel. Looks like they still haven't.

3. I think it's getting worse. It's beyond the "Bible as history" farces they usually air,
you know, the ones with the sappy pseudo-Jewish music. Yesterday, they re-aired "God v Satan," one of their all-time laughers.

It really sucks because I used to watch THC a lot. Now, it seems like it's turning into a fucking religious network. It's almost like they feel the need to "balance" their scientifically based series like "The Universe" with this mythical dreck, but they treat the mythical dreck like it's as fact based as their science shows.

4. Hitler, Jesus and UFOs: The History Channel's bread and butter.
They have always been that way.

5. At least Hitler really existed. Can't say that with any certainty about Jesus or UFOs.
Your point is taken, though.

6. I share your frustration....
However they do have the occasional good shows like Moder Marvels, The Universe, and Einstein.

7. I would have expected that on Christmas,
but all I found was a string of shows on UFOs. How I yearn for the days of The Hitler Channel.

9. Re: the production of Band of Brothers
The History Channel had nothing to do with it. The mini-series was produced by HBO, DreamWorks, Playtone (Tom Hanks production company) and the BBC. It was first shown on HBO in the fall of 2001.

I agree with you that much of what appears on The History Channel is dreck. Their Civil War shows are less accurate and less informative than attending a Civil War reenactment. In my family, we alternate between calling THC the All-Hitler/All-The-Time channel, and the All-Egypt/All-The-Time channel.

10. They've been pretty bad for a long time.
Then again, what do you expect from television? Most of the stuff on it is 90% fluff.
