Boo Julie Christie?
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 11:07 PM by soleft
I haven't seen Away From Her, but from what I hear I'm sure she deserved the Sag Award for Best Actress. But it seemed to me she made a rather tasteless joke at the end of her acceptance speech. In case you missed it, she said something like "And if I've forgotten anyone, well, I'm still in character." Her character, in case you don't know about the movie, suffers from Alzeimers disease.

Am I being too sensitive, was it just not funny, or was it really just in poor taste?

4. But what if Daniel Day Lewis tripped while going up to get his Oscar
And said, sorry, still in character?

5. I didn't take it that way.
I also have not seen the film so I can't judge her performance and subsequent acceptance speech. I'm just glad that she can still move and compile a list of people to thank.

I didn't notice a ribbon pin of any color on her, but I wasn't looking for one.

Is there an official ribbon color for Alzheimer's disease? I'm presuming that you would know.

7. Never thought she was all that good to begin with
And this is the first time I have heard this comment. First impression is that it sucks. My grandma had Alzheimer's and it was awful. So I don't really have a sense of humor about it.

8. What is "good to begin with" enough for you?
Have you seen any of these Julie Christie films?

Darling http://imdb.com/title/tt0059084/
Doctor Zhivago http://imdb.com/title/tt0059113/
McCabe & Mrs. Miller http://imdb.com/title/tt0067411/

(jumping way ahead)
Afterglow http://imdb.com/title/tt0118566/

Please explain. Have I been that stupid? (rhetorical question)

16. Wow. Lighten up
I just offered an opinion and you jump down my throat. Sorry. Um, let me correct that, no I'm not. McCabe and Mrs. Miller was ok, Dr. Zhivago isn't the type of movie I care for, and I never saw the other two. Relax. Take it easy. I am entitled to my opinion just as you are entitled to yours.

9. I think it's funny, I can't believe all this PC
crap I don't think she meant to harm Alzheimer's victims. Us old people always joke about having senior moments.

13. that's true
But since my Mom's short term memory has gotten progressively worse we don't really make that joke anymore.

10. Did someone boo her? Since I think she is classy, I can't believe she was
malevolent or tasteless. She has taste. You could take her statement either way. Her own character of forgetfullness or the character in the movie. I didn't feel it was offensive. Bravo, Julie!!!!

12. So it's the equivalent of Michael J. Fox winning an award for playing someone with Parkinson's
and saying at the podium "Sorry about all the trembling--I'm still in character"?

If so, that shows a remarkable gift for being able to make light of one's own condition, rather than an insensitive attitude.

If so, good for her.

14. I did not know that
My mother suffers from the same thing. So in a way it was really self deprecating humor.

17. Probably a bit too sensitive
My Dad suffers from this, and I will give her the benefit of the doubt that she was not trying to mock, at least it did not come off that way too me.
