Sundown Towns
James Loewen (author of "Lies My Teacher Told Me") has a new book out about all-white towns in the U.S. He focuses on the Midwest, because that's where he's from. It looks like a winner.

Here's a chat with the author:

And a review of the book from the Washington Post:

1. segregation
Odd to focus on the midwest, as I fear that much of the segregation in this country is found in the urban northeast, where the author lives. It's always taking place in someone else's backyard. Bemoaning the poor people of New Orleans, as if the segregation and inequity that was revealed by Katrina was limited to one area.

Not just the South. And really, the Midwest was a hotbed of overt racism: It was Indiana where the Klan found its resurgence in the 1920s and 30s.
