I'm reading "It Can't Happen Here"

And it's...frighteningly, disturbingly plausible. A must-read..

This is the second of Sinclair Lewis's books I've read. A few weeks back, I finished and loved "Main Street", a brilliant look at the hypocrisies of small town life.

I'm looking forward to reading more of Lewis' works: "Elmer Gantry" "Dodsworth" "Arrowsmith"

2. I read it. Scared the bejeezus out of me, and that was in 1998.

You'll LOVE "Elmer Gantry". Not a spoiler, but you'll be re-introduced to *, Jerry F., James Dobson, and Pat Robertson. This was the only book I talked out loud to as I read it.

4. My favorite is "Babbit". . .

not as well-structured as most, but definitely the better for his observations on human character and the nature of American "boosterism."

5. Rent Elmer Gantry, the movie with Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons.

Well worth watching.

7. That's a very good book

I read several of Lewis's books last year: that one, Arrowsmith, Babbitt, and Elmer Gantry. Many elements of them speak to our current situation pretty accurately, and they are just fun to read.

8. I recently read Kingsblood Royal

and it made me a fan of Sinclair Lewis forever

I intend to read everything by him I can lay my hands on this year

My favorites are Babbitt and Dodsworth - his books are very important for the social commentary, though some are over-written.

It's a good wakeup call for moderates who like to imagine that this cabal will go away of its own accord.

13. I read it last year when Kerry was photographed with it on the top

of his stack of books during an interview. Frighteningly close to the truth - We may have dodged Fascism 70 yrs ago but the US is embracing it now. Highly recommended.

I read that in high school, a LONG time ago. Haven't thought of it since, but it's interesting that the events of 65 years ago can seem so contemporary. I can see I'm gonna need to pick up Lewis again.
