21. So far it's okay.
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 07:47 AM by hippywife
I'm 120+ pages in and it's about the same length as the last one. It's really the same theme basically as the last one...unsolved murder from decades ago being revived in a small town. Just a slightly different twist in that it's not a family member that was killed, but a seemingly unknown, unidentified victim.

It could be my mood, too, that I'm not enjoying it as much as the last one. Plus, like I think I said before, this isn't my usual genre. For someone that likes to read murder mysteries, it might be a whole different review.

32. Am a mystery reader...
Almost every book I read (not all) I think is a waste of time till I get half-way through. Then, it seems the author wakes up and decides to "write." At that point, most books seem very good.

Then, there's the killer book at page 25 where the author falls asleep and by half-way, it's a waste of time.

Seems no book is good from beginning to end.

20. Don't Deny Yourself The Pleasures Of The Movie.

Big controversy when it came out, because it reflects Heinlein's fascist ruling class notions. AND FEATURING---Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris) as an S.S.-uniformed bug torturer. Yowza.....

36. I have seen it.
True, it doesn't follow the book exactly, but I thought it was good. The society was pretty much spot on, in my opinion though, albeit updated for then-modern technology. I do wish that they would have at least used the power armor, though, instead of the armor they did use.

41. Glad You Enjoyed It.

I love making references to the flick here at DU, because it generally sets of one or more Heinlein True Believers, who absolutely hate it for not adhering to the novel, word-for-word. Go figure......

28. Cane River by Lalita Tademy.
It's a fiction that is based on the intensive genealogy she did into her own family which started out as slaves in Louisiana. Only 26 pages in at this point but I think I'm really going to enjoy it.

I've always been curious about his work; I'd really rather read Less Than Zero first, but the library doesn't have it.

I'm about 100 pages in. Don't really know what to think yet.

I still have daymares about this. It makes the Christian Bale movie look like a Disney film by comparison.

My god.

But I'm halfway through and now I'm curious as to where Ellis is going with it.

And I remember the controversy about the movie -- and you say it's a cleaned-up version of the book?? :o

Historical novel of a Dutch trading company official in Japan, circa 1799, currently on the best seller lists. I just got it from the library today and started reading it---looks very promising, like "Shogun" but a lot sharper.....

42. Finished this last night..
I think it was good. Not my usual mystery - more of a drama, but with a lot of humor. Bittersweet story.

Most of the time my hero is a detective, sheriff, cop, agent, etc., but this hero is an unemployed consultant.
