Have any of you an opinion on the novels of the author Iain Pears?
Edited on Thu Apr-23-09 09:43 PM by Lex

I haven't read any of his novels before but am thinking of trying one once I finish the book I'm currently reading.

Here's some about him if you aren't familiar:

Most of the reviews on Amazon of his novels are extremely positive.

1. I really enjoyed An Instance of the Fingerpost
and that other one I can't remember the name of right now, about the end of the HR Empire from the perspective of one of its provincial bureaucrats somewhere in the British Isles, if I remember correctly.

Both books were nearly as sophisticated as the things that Umberto Echo writes, but without being as obtuse.

3. Oh good. I have "An Instance of the Fingerpost" on hold at the library.
I'm going to give it a try. I did enjoy "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, but it was way longer than it needed to be, in my opinion.

4. An Instance of the Fingerposts was an excellent read
The Dream of Scipio didn't really do much for me at all, but MrsCoffee loved his Jonathan Argyll mystery series

6. "An Instance of the Fingerpost" is one of my favorite books
A Rashomon in print, as each new narrator adds more to the story and casts doubt upon the previous narrator.

8. I love your taste!

:hi:

I'll have to try to work my way through it again, although I've read all of his other ones more than once!

7. One of my favorite writers! Brilliant, funny, clever, wonderful characters.
I recommend his books to all my friends so they can share my addiction. I have all of his books that I can get my hot little hands on.

Oddly, I haven't been able to get all the way through Fingerpost, though I've tried.

11. I think it helps to know the history of the period
all about the Puritans, Catholics, and mainstream Church of England types, as well as the various foreign intrigues that were going on.

9. Brilliant!
Love his books. Am reading the Dream of Scipio about the end of empires--very relevant to our own times--masterfully crafted. really recommend it.

10. Fantastic Fiction
Great website. Thank you for the link. I always go another and will now go to both. Fantastic is a huge website and it takes a bit longer to find an author because I read ONLY mystery/thrillers.

I found a new one listed at FF that isn't on SYKM yet - it's coming out on Oct 27/09. It's by James D. Doss and it's called THE WIDOW'S REVENGE. I really like this guy's writing.

Thanks for the link again . . .
