Forty Signs of Rain, Fifty Degrees Below, and Sixty Days and Counting
by Kim Stanley Robinson

If you happen to be the DUer who recommended these to me - thank you! I never would have read them had it not been for your recommendation and little review.

And now I'm recommending them to all my friends. Thanks again! :hi:

2. I'm not the one, but it's an excuse to repeat my favorite excerpt...
The President in this novel is described as follows: "It was a pastime in some circles to judge just how much of a dimwit the President was, how much of a performing puppet for the people manipulating him; but facing him in person, Charlie felt instantly confirmed in his minority position that the man had such a huge amount of low cunning that it amounted to a sort of genius." Is KSR a charter member of the reality-based community, or what?

3. I haven't gotten the third one yet.
Whoever took it out of the library is about six months overdue. The complete bastard!

KSR is my favorite author (still living anyways...big on Vonnegut and Hunter Thompson still). His book The Years Of Rice And Salt is a tour de force of writing, and one of the best single books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's an alternate history where Christianity never took hold, and Islam and Buddhism are the main religions. It's more spiritual than sci-fi in many ways, but I think it's his best book, and that's really saying something.

My favorite part of these books you're reading now is when the main character, who is living in the woods, gets up in the morning and hoots with the gibbons from his treehouse.WHHHOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPP!!!!!

Check out his Mars trilogy if you like a hefty does of politics with your hard science.

KSR is simply one of the best.I'm psyched to see others into him like I am.

4. If it wasn't me, it couldda been!
I LOVED those books! I'll be the first to admit that they're not great literature....by "proper" literary criteria....but they're GREAT reads, and they have the most prescient feel to them. So very glad that you liked them and are passing on The Word. Thanks for the feed-back. Ms Bigmack
