Huge, unprecedented lines in my precinct in NYC (always walked straight through). 3 black hoodies in my line (with me). Black guy outside promoting GOP state senator (without mentioning the party)

11. Orangevale, CA
Hi Everyone

We live in Orangevale, CA which is about 20 miles east of Sacramento, CA. We had a line when we arrived at 7:05 !!! In the 10 years I've lived here, we've never had to wait--this morning it was about a 25 minute wait. When we left there were many people in line (about 60). Our polling place is rather small--someone at our Democratic Office said it was around 500. This area is a heavy republican stronghold, so hopefully with a large turnout we can change that. Take care. I'm off to do some phone bank work.

Susan

42. lines in rural kansas
I live in Plainville Kansas. I don't know what the population is, but it definitely isn't more than maybe 2000 people. I went in just a few minutes after 7 am and I had to wait for around 20 minutes to vote. When I put my ballot in the electronic ballot box, it was number 55 - and it wasn't even 7:30 yet.
Usually in small towns here there is NEVER a line to vote. This is the second presidential election I have voted in (only turned 19 right b4 2000 elections), but even my mom said that there were lines in my hometown (40 miles away and about the same size as Plainville). I was irritated to wait because I didn't anticipate it, but I was sooooo happy to see so many people voting!
The sad thing is, most of those people lined up to vote were going to vote for * . I don't know why so many people here don't get it and don't care if they get it.
Oh, i feel cheated too because I didn't get my "I voted" sticker. (they didn't have any) ;)
:p

4. I got there at 5:45 am
I was voter 01 in my district!! By the time the polls were open, there were over a dozen people for my district. By the time I left, there were about 30.

My mom reported from Portsmouth, VA that at 9 a.m. she had to wait 45 minutes (she has never had to wait before), when she scanned her vote, she was voter number 455. The poll worker said on a good day they usually get about 500 total. She said when she left there were over 100 people on line. A lot of elderly (makes sense, since working-age people are probably already at work) were there, some in wheelchairs, some with oxygen tanks. These folks would NOT be denied.

5. Hartford CT - no line
We went at 9:30 and did not have to wait AT ALL. We were horrified. We waited in line for about an hour and a half in 2001, and usually have to wait for a few minutes even for small local elections.

But then we got GOOD NEWS: The workers told us there had been a lot of voters from 5 to 9 am, and that it had only just cleared out shortly before we arrived.

7. Voted In Mid-Michigan
My wife and I voted at a rural precinct in mid-Michigan. I have lived and voted here for forty years and have never seen line ups at the polls like this. Our township hall parking lot was full and people were parking as far as 500 yds away. These folks were not here to vote for more of the same. Bush is going down big time in Michigan and I hope we can send Dave Camp with him. I once said if I had to vote for Kerry it would be the worst vote I ever cast. I was wrong and I am sorry, it was one of the best votes I have ever cast.

62. more mid-MI
I went to my polling place (48842, precinct 8) during the lunch hour, and was in and out of there in 20 minutes (including a thorough re-check of my ballot for screw-ups). There was a steady trickle of people in one of the smallest precincts in my town. There were no fewer than 10 people in various stages of the polling process, and always a few open booths.

My wife voted about an hour earlier than me, and said that she had to wait (briefly) in line for a polling booth to open up. Anecdotally, the precinct workers were saying that they had much heavier traffic during the early hours.

Mainly, I'm writing this to point out a good example of democracy in action. No challengers, no aggressive electioneers outside, no touch-screen machines to bork the votes. Simply a well-oiled machine striving toward simple harmonic motion.

peace,
MG

Husband, Mom and I got in line about 5:45 AM for poll opening at 6:00, we had about a 40 minute wait. We were very surprised to see the line that long so early, but encouraging. Everyone was very respectful and seemed up beat. We had punchcard ballots and there were plenty of signs all over reminding voters to make sure there were no hanging chads! Even my 88 year old mother made sure of that!

Good experience all around!

I was voter 152 in my precinct at 7:50 AM, fifty minutes after the polls opened. I brought my children and let them punch the cards for me. They raced out of the polling place -- a historic old farm house -- and shouted, "We voted, we voted, yay, we voted!" That drew smiles and applause from the voters in line. But there were also a lot of grim, serious faces. Our town knows how important this election is.

16. Major lines in Chicago
I'm waiting til after work to vote so my daughter can go with me. She did some work on the campaign, so she ought to share the payoff.

My boss stopped to vote this morning on the North Side, and the wait was two hours. So he went back just now, thinking lunchtime would be easier, and the lines are worse. Like me, he is leaving work early to make sure he can vote.

My bus driver this morning told me people were lining up on the South Side (code for Black neighborhoods, for those not familiar with Chicago) two hours before the polls opened, and lines were around the block in a chilly drizzle. He said Obama and Kerry people were handing out coffee.

In Clintonville. Arrived at 7:45, voted at 9:15. No challengers present. Lots of kids in the halls between classes exhorting us to vote for kerry (none mentioned bush)!

Woman in front of me noted that she was just in France and brought back 4 absentee ballots from ex-pat friends who were worried they wouldn't make it in time. She was kicking herself for not getting a flu shot while she was there!

Seemed to me to be a lot of democrats in line, but hard to tell.

Got there at 6:35am, voted at about 8:05am. I drove by several polling places on my way to work out in Gahanna, and everyplace was slammed. My normal 35-minute commute took more like 50 because of cars waiting to turn into polling places or parking alongside roads and partially blocking the roads.

Oh, and on the way to and from work, lots of people standing out on Morse Road - in the rain - waving Kerry signs! Awesome!!!

Arrived at the polling place at All Star Donuts (Hyde&California) around 8:45 AM. There was a line about 10 deep waiting to vote! This is the first time in the 8 years that I've voted in this precinct that I have seen a line. Wow! People sure are energized for this election. No problems to report. Waited in line for about 30-45 minutes.

Turnout was the heaviest I've seen since my first vote in 1984.

When I arrived at 8:30 AM there were 25 people in front of me and when I left there were 40 people behind me waiting to vote.

Usually there has been no more than 6-10 other voters total in the line during past elections.

Weather here is intermittent rain with temperatures in the low 70's.

On another note, the only people out holding signs and waving to the traffic at the busy intersections were supporting either Democrats or locals (non-partisan) - not a single Republican was seen.

Bush may be the greatest leader in the history of mankind but he ain't worth gettin' wet over. <snicker>

I was the only voter at the small rural township at the time I voted a few minutes ago, but the election judges made a comment that there've been more voters than normal. The volunteer who checked for my name on the list of registered voters an old duffer. 50. Longest line I've seen at 10:30 am
I'm in Prince Georges County, just outside Washington DC.

I always go around 10:30 am, because there's rarely a line longer than 2 or 3 people. There were about 15 ahead of us.

Thank god people are starting to care!

52. Delaware! 2 Different areas: City(Wilmington) and (Seaford) Farm
the polls were quiet and not very full. a couple people every couple mins. the two extremes of delaware were very apparent this year. pretty heavy BLUE up north and lots of enthusiasm in the parking lot between the trickle in and out of voters, but we drove 90 miles south the Kerry sign in my car window started getting me a lot of dirty looks.

54. Big turnout in Brooklyn
My mom and I went to vote when the polls opened at 6, and there was already a good crowd. Everything went smoothly. By the time we left the line had tripled, and it was out the door. I've NEVER seen that many people. There were a LOT of new voters. I noticed a few hoodies too.

went about thirty min after the polls opened, took about 15 min. to get a ballot and a station, took another 15 to vote...we have so many props! Very smooth IMO, husband is voting now at lunchtime, we will see how it goes for him.

He just got back, no wait, in and out in 20 mins. I heard from someone who had voted here before that this polling station is notoriously dead. So the fact that I had to wait means a jump in voters most likely.

70 miles north of Tampa, retirement/bible belt community. Runs about 50-50 repub/dem but the repubs have been on the rise for the past 10 years.

Our local paper reported yesterday that 47% of registered voters had already voted early! An amazing number, but with our senior population, probably fairly accurate.

Consequently, my precinct -- one of the largest in the county -- was not crowded, but was busy. I only had a 5-10 minute wait.

63. jefferson ga, i just returned from my 3rd trip driving folks to the polls
5/1 repug registration, but i'm trying to lower that ratio at the polls today in these parts.

i wore my red sox hat and springsteen "born to run" shirt into the polling center! and only the dem poll worker knew what i was doing and winked at me when i tugged my hat at her!

also, i brought chicken, cookies, soft drinks, apples and oranges to the poll workers, all sweet ladies who thanked me since they can not leave the center all day. i shook each of their hands and thanked them for volunteering to help democracy work.

the dem worker told me that the dem turnout was very high in the precinct.

i drive 8 people from my rural neighborhood to the polls today, all dems! they were great rides over to the polls. we know bush wins in georgia, but solidarity my friends, solidarity!

but, since I live in a town where repubs outnumber dems by atleast 4 to 1, I think that's a good sign. (Mendham, NJ in Morris County). I know several Repubs that aren't voting this year.

The poll workers said that the turnout was "steady", but no lines really.

The line was moderate, but very steady. I've never seen that much of a line at this precinct. About 50 to 60 in line at all times. Everyone was very nice and considerate of everybody. Weather was ok this morning at 9:30 or so, but started raining later in the day, so do not know how that effected voting. Everyone seemed very gratified at the number of voters. Usually when we vote we walk right in. The wait was about 20 to 30 minutes. Three votes for Kerry.

Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 04:26 PM by GinaMaria
since I took the day off. I knew the lines would be long this morning and our local news was encouraging people who could vote during the day to do so.

Same old crappy punch cards. That were damn near impossible to punch. I had to put all my weight on that stylus a couple of times. I let the poll workers know about it.

It took me a long time because I had 3 different lists for the judges. About an hour after I voted I couldn't recall if my house rep slot was on the ballot. I still don't know.

The judges were impossible to line up with the little holes. Vote either yes or no. I did not have an over vote when they checked the machine, so I must have done OK.

I held the punch card up and made sure the #4 for Kerry was punched out.

I then went to volunteer to GOTV in Ohio at a Chicago cell phone bank. btw, I'm in Chicago.

No lines at all, but a steady flow of people and the poll workers said there had been lines earlier.

The last I heard, voter turnout nationwide is at about 60%.

Oh, no challengers there (that I saw). No camcorders, no voter intimidation. Just a few people holding various candidate's signs about 50' from the entrance.

78. Out in rural PA
In the biggest Democratic stronghold between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (and possibly the only one) turnout was pathetic. There was one guy handing out fliers Representative John P. Murtha paid for. I got there around 2 pm, and was voter number 226, and there was literally no one in line, and only two people came in while I was there, and elderly couple.

It didn't help matters that 3 of the democrats were running unopposed, including Congressman Murtha. But there was no one trying to intimidate any elderly voters or anything.

I just don't see how Bush can win Michigan. He didn't last time and I'm pretty sure he won't this time either. I'm proud of my state---and I'll be even prouder when Proposal 2 fails to amend state constitution so marriage is 1 man + 1 woman. ick!

I voted by absentee last week in my larger Wisco city, but my parents live in a rural town of about 2000 people. By noon today, their polling station had estimated already 1200 voters accounted for and 30 minute lines in a place that you rarely even saw other voters at when you went to cast your ballot (I have voted there in the past). While it's true that their town traditionally votes repug, this year we're seeing the Kerry/Edwards signs everywhere. This is all very good news!! Keep voting Wisconsin!!!

Lots of young voters and "minority" voters which to me is a promising sign.

As in the suburbs that are south of Detroit.

No problems, went right in and out.

I was nervous because I registered by mail - first time voter. They didn't even ask me for my ID. I had my voter card though, and she probably saw my license in my hand. Everybody was extremely polite. It wasn't too busy either - I think I was the youngest person at the place! My mother told me they are probably pleased to see a young voter.

It took me five minutes to vote - we had the lever machines.

There was one person outside the building, trying to inform voters against Proposal 2 (marriage between man and woman only).

I told him not to worry, I was voting no. I was going to wish him good luck on the way out, but there were too many cars waiting for me to cross the street.

All in all, a good day!

:)

I arrived at 7 a.m. as the polls opened and was No. 101 in line at my small district. I have never seen anything like the turnout or the number of young voters.

My wife voted just after lunch at the same location. One of the poll workers told her that more than 50% of the eligible district voters had already voted by lunchtime.
