They call this optical scanning system the 'Full Employment for Election Lawyer's Act.' - Biamonte
Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 12:40 AM by Wilms
HAHAHA. There's was LOTS of paper in FL2000 and OH2004. And guess what...

snip

"Everything is going to be on paper. So the paper will be the paper, but the paper is also much easily subject to challenge then a vote on a lever machine," Biamonte elucidated. "Rather than just challenging the write-in votes, almost everything can be challenged in a close election. They call this optical scanning system the 'Full Employment for Election Lawyer's Act.'"

snip

"I think there will be a sense that the change was made for no particular good reason," Biamonte said of the general public's expected reception of the new machines. "We had a voting system that we had confidence in, that we knew worked, that had a limited amount of problems. We're replacing it with a voting system that has numerous problems and I think will foster a sense of lack of confidence in the system."

snip

Meanwhile, is there any mention of the lawsuit to keep the levers? No. How about mention of the lawsuit to correct the overvote notification? No, again.

I'm a bit disappointed with the incuriousness exhibited by the article's author. It's hard to imagine Biamonte not mentioning it.

1. Biamonte is absolutely right and there's even more unreported stuff going on.
When you hear the anti-lawyer rhetoric that used to be reserved for use by Republicans coming from a Democrat (Biamonte), there's got to be something to it. And there is.

2. Well, as Mr. "I see Bush v. Gore all over this machine" Peter Chryssos said,
"Someone must have gotten a very nice contract out of this."

3. not my favorite arguments
some of these argumemts sound like the ones for DRES.
No paper, no proof, no lawsuits.

Better to argue that mechanical less diabolical than computer. IMHO.

I don't think highly of the DS200s, they have too much wrong with them.

How hard is it to create/manuf optical scanners that aren't eaten up with bugs?
Banks use them all the time.

I think that levers have some advantages, but the argument that there are fewer lawsuits
isn't that appealing to me.

Thats why DREs proliferated all over my state for a few decades.

4. (Some) NYers tell it like it is.
Screw with the election and send a pile of lawyers to muddy the waters while Fox news cheers them on. That's on a bad day.

On a good day, the computer tally is the result.

No thanks.

5. It's NOT just about the scanners. NY's paper ballot election laws are being amended

in ways that will guarantee uncertainty and litigation.

It's not about vote counting, election integrity, deterring fraud, or determining true voter intent anymore. It's about the ambulance chasers.

The only ones to benefit from such changes are the election lawyers who write these laws with little or no public oversight, and the campaigns who can afford their services. Everyone else is screwed, including the voters.

That's what's going on in NY now, under the radar, while everyone's attention is diverted by the also-serious overvoting problem.
