Ohio 2008 opens with a subpoena, a surge and calls for election protection

Ohio 2008 has opened with a surge of first-time voters and the subpoena of a shadowy Bush electronic operative who may have helped steal the White House, a subpoena that may be followed by one for Karl Rove.

The presidency could again be decided here by how well what’s left of the American democratic process can be protected. So election activists are asking concerned citizens everywhere to become registration volunteers, poll workers and judges, Video the Vote observers and to conduct post-election hearings with legal standing.

In-person balloting began Tuesday, September 30, as new Ohio voters registered and voted simultaneously. Thousands crammed into county facilities throughout the state. Set to continue until October 6, the innovation came by accident in an otherwise repressive piece of legislation foisted on the state by Republican legislators after the theft of the 2004 election.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Elections officials in Cleveland are telling about 250,000 registered voters to update their home addresses to avoid problems on Election Day.

Voters have until Monday to update addresses with the Cuyahoga (keye-uh-HOH'-guh) County elections board. Otherwise, they may be directed to other polling places to vote by provisional ballots that would be counted 10 days after the election only if address information is confirmed.

About 250,000 mailed voting reminders have been returned to the board since the March primary. The names of voters whose reminders were returned have been flagged on polling-place voter books.


The county, with 1 million registered voters, has a history of election problems including computer failures, poorly trained poll workers and vote-counting delays.

CLEVELAND -- The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is cutting 30 bus routes.

The cuts will start Nov. 2, which is two days before the presidential election. Congressmen are calling on the U.S. Justice Department to investigate RTA, saying the cuts will undermine a fair election.

Riders are fuming about trying to find a ride to the polls. U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich agrees.

"People have a right to vote," Kucinich said. "Their right to vote should not be compromised by RTA or anyone else."...
