"GOP is going to try to get as "close as we can to 100 percent" of the vote counted."

Doin' The Best We Can!

I already noted in the post below the comically unfolding story of Washington state GOP chair Luke Esser, who decided to stop counting the votes in the state GOP caucus with 13% of the votes still uncounted and has spent the last 24 hours coming up with increasingly ridiculous explanations of his actions.

TPM Reader NM just flagged this article in the Seattle Times http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004175292_webhuckabee10.html which quotes Esser now saying that the state GOP is going to try to get as "close as we can to 100 percent" of the vote counted.

I mean, don't knock yourself out, right?

From the Seattle Times article:
...(W)ith 87 percent of the precincts counted...McCain was ahead of Huckabee by 242 delegates out of the 13,000 counted...The Huckabee campaign contends there were another 1,500 or so delegates not counted.

...The state Republican party posted new numbers late this afternoon, with 93 percent of the precincts reporting. The percentages didn't change much, with McCain winning about 25 percent of the delegates, Huckabee 24 percent, Paul 21 percent, and Romney 17 percent.

...(Washington State) Republican Party chairman Luke Esser said their last county report on Saturday came shortly before 10:15 p.m., at which point they had 87.2 percent of precincts reporting..."Let's take every county where Huckabee is beating McCain, and double the margin of victory...(a)nd then take every county where McCain is winning and cut in half that margin of victory. Even if you assume that, Sen. McCain still holds on...I would have done the same for Gov. Huckabee if he had the same margin and the same underlying dynamics as Sen. McCain."

But why assume anything? WHY double or half the margin of victory--why not go with the numbers as they were? And why ignore 1500 votes when the real margin of victory is less than 250? And now for the most important question of all: how can I make a contribution to DU now that I have to buy a new bullshit meter?

:nuke:
