Court Rejects Blocking Ariz. Voter Law
This seemed timely, but perhaps not. Anyway, here 'tis...

Court Rejects Blocking Ariz. Voter Law

By PAUL DAVENPORT
Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX (AP) - A federal appeals court on Friday rejected an attempt to halt enforcement of an Arizona law that requires voters to show identification before casting a ballot and submit proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a trial judge's refusal last year to block the requirement while a legal challenge awaits trial in federal court in Phoenix.

"Now we know we get to enforce the law while the lawsuit is pending," state Solicitor General Mary O'Grady said.

The 2004 law requires that voters at polling places produce government-issued picture ID or two pieces of other non-photo identification specified by the law. Other parts of the law dealt with ineligibility of illegal immigrants to receive some government services and benefits.

Supporters of the requirement contend it helps prevent voter fraud by non-citizens.

1. When I went to vote last year, my government issued, military dependent
ID card was not accepted. They wanted my driver's license. I don't understand why. I also don't understand how they are going to enforce this law, or why it doesn't need to be enforced, on mail in ballots. It all seems like a bunch of hogwash to me.

2. And that government issued, military ID, has a picture on it, but it
Wasn't accepted??? That is astonishing. And wrong.

3. Of course, that's what I thought, but I think it was because they wanted
something with an address on it. I just don't understand that, though, because illegal immigrants have addresses, too - and driver's licenses! It's all very nonsensical to me.

4. The day a military ID is not allowed is the day you raise your voice!
And for voting? I'm really appalled, and this should not be the end of this story, my friend.
What the hell was YOUR SON over there for, and MY HUSBAND who did 20 years? It's wrong...
Can I scream about this in the near future?

8. My husband did 20, too. I did nine. I don't know what the problem was,
Maybe, it's because a military ID doesn't show you live in the state. I just don't get it, though, because my voter registration card shows my address and if I had voted by mail, I wouldn't have had to show anybody anything.

6. It is really bad timing for Texas
We're about to have a floor vote on two very bad voter roadblock bills on Monday modeled after the Arizona laws and the side that hates voting is going to use this case now to argue that they are constitutional.

I can not believe it was the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They're usually constitutional friendly. What happened to them?

By the way can you give me a link to the story?

Sonia

7. Republicans
Are doing everything they can to keep us from voting. They know every vote counts. By whittling away at a vote here and there, they hope to keep the count close enough to steal. Remember, Florida 2000 was decided by less than 600 votes.
