Smartmatic to Bail From E-Voting Business
By Michael Hickins

It looks like one time through the unruly U.S. electoral cycle was one time too many for Smartmatic.

After suffering through a difficult year on both regulatory and public relations fronts, the Boca Raton, Fla.-based technology vendor announced that it will try to find a buyer for its Sequoia Voting Systems unit, which it acquired in March 2005.

Antonio Mugica, president of Smartmatic, said the company reached this decision in light of the debate over foreign ownership of the voting systems vendor.

"Given the current climate of the United States marketplace with so much public debate over foreign ownership of firms in an area that is viewed as critical U.S. infrastructure -- election technology -- we feel it is in both companies' best interests to move forward as separate entities with separate ownership," Mugica said in a statement. "As part of this process, we plan to sell our Sequoia Voting Systems ownership."

1. I wouldn't say bye-bye yet
They'll probably be bought up by somebody like Diebold. Although maybe Soros---nah, that would be too good to be true.

2. I'm still thinking a new basis for a coral reef somewhere in the the middle of the Gulf of
Mexico is the best disposal of all these voting machines...

8. LOL!! I like it, emlev...We may need to name ourselves a new non- profit!

Our mission is to gather all the inert carcasses of the DRE's...any bad stuff like batteries are removed. We load them on a barge and sink those puppies off a nice beach in the gulf and wait for the coral to grow... preferably enjoying a little hammock time, watching the waves and frolicking in the surf since we are there...:toast:

DRE Reef-Form, Inc...Donate your useless carcass of a voting machine here...

Are any of these computers able to be rehabilitated and donated to worthy causes like local public schools?

9. Glad you liked it...
It's the third time I've posted that joke over the last several months and you're the first one ever to respond to it. So thanks.

I've wondered the same thing about retrofitting those DREs. I know the Post Office's customer service computers are way, way out of date. Libraries might be able to use them as well. I think anybody who'd start a company to retrofit these machines would make enough money to...buy Sequoia?

10. I don't know how much money they might make but it sure would be
A Public Service!

I've posted my coral reef plan several times as well. Funny how long it took the two of us to hit the same thread as often as we both post.. :toast:
