Finally it becomes bi-partisan - a Democrat steps up and does the right thing -
he calls for the replacement of Maryland's top elections official, Linda Lamone.
(The Democratic Party has a long history of shielding Ms. Lamone regardless of her massive failures as outlined in "Connecting Maryland's Election Debacle Dots".
Ms. Lamone, who bragged to the 2005 Virginia Legislative committee that "The buck stops with me." - should prove she means it - and voluntarily resign.
10/11 Ehrlich Picks Up Business Endorsement; O'Malley Rolls Out Ad on Crime
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan (D) yesterday encouraged Maryland voters to use absentee ballots in the November election because he lacks confidence in the state's electronic voting system.
"I'm voting absentee because I've got more confidence that my vote will be counted," Duncan said at a news conference. "If you have any hesitation or any concerns at all, vote absentee."
Duncan, who dropped out of the gubernatorial race in June, blamed "gross incompetence" for the mishaps during the September primary, and he called for the replacement of Linda H. Lamone , the state elections administrator. He has already called for the dismissal of key Montgomery elections officials.
"If I was in charge," Duncan said, "we'd have new people in place already."
Democrats including Duncan and O'Malley both recommend voting absentee.(I agree, but only in specific reference to Maryland).
How can anyone vote on the paperless Diebold touchscreens after the latest revelation of another gigantic flaw in the system?
Now comes reports of a "new" feature of Maryland's Diebold voting machines -
Reboot the touchscreens and the memory cards will show "0" votes.
See Avi Rubin's report on the failure of Diebold memory packs to upload votes in the recent primary:
Republican Chief Judge in the September 12 primary in Montgomery County, Maryland reports:
One of the eight touch screen voting machines used on election day recorded no votes, even though 55 voters were logged onto the machine.
The problem as explained by Diebold and the county BoE:
That particular touch screen machine had been rebooted, and the memory card had been removed and reinserted into the machine.
The election judge was told that this was a "security" feature!
The Board of Elections, with the help of Diebold was able to recover the “missing” votes from the hard drive.
Three things must be done now:
1. Fire Linda Lamone. Things can't get any worse - Maryland elections have been a debacle since she came aboard. Lamone should go back to "lawyering" or whatever it is that she has the credentials for.
2. Bring in qualified administrators now to oversee and monitor the preparations for the November Election.
3. Provide paper ballots at every precinct, with checks and balances, and proper chain of custody as proscribed by seasoned and effective administrators
