However, based on the principle that Democracy is dead if the voters don't trust the election, I believe that we need more security than you suggestion offers.
1. The vote casting and counting process must be taken out of the hands of partisans.
2. The vote casting process must be simple, quick and TOTALLY verifiable.
3. There must be a hard copy, unchangeable vote log that is made published so that all can verify their vote.
4. Each vote(transaction) should be tied to a specific American citizen social security number that is related to an individual id name and personal access code.
5. The votes could be cast throughout the last two weeks of October either (a) login online (b) login at public facilities, i.e. post office or libraries (c) or if unable to operate a computer, go to a federally regulated voting place anytime during the two week period to use touch screen, still verifying SS#, personal ID name and personal access code.
6. On November 2, all voting logs would be published in local newspapers or made available at a public facility by precinct. Every vote for the precinct would be displayed: VOTER ID "happyapplejunk" Pres - dem VP - dem Senator novote At the end of the report would be the tallying of all votes. Each precinct tally would be added to the state totals. The arithmetic would be totally transparent and correct. The results of the election could be verified during the first week of November.
7. The seriousness of the need to have totally honest and accurate elections justifies whatever costs it might require to put them in place.
