Outrageous New Georgia Voter ID Law Must be Stopped
Let meOutrageous New Georgia Voter ID Law Must be Stopped
Let me Know if You can Identify the Documented Vote Fraud the GOP Complains Of

Yesterday, GA Gov. Sonny Perdue signed an outrageous bill that would mandate state approved photo ID's, such as drivers licenses, in order to vote. I blogged my concern over this bill before it was signed on this site several weeks ago. Now that it has been signed, I have led a group of 21 Members of Congress, including Sen. Russ Feingold, in asking the Department of Justice to throw out this discriminatory piece of legislation. The Atlanta Journal Constitution has a story on the bill (registration requred).

It is quite an amazing and discouraging development, and one that we are seeing in other "Red" States. The GOP is clearly engaged in a power ploy, and they are stopping at no means in their effort to eradicate all political opposition. We began with the ruthless effort to stop the Florida recount. Than we had the amazing mid-decade gerrymands in Texas and Colorado (the latter thrown out by the courts), which singlehanded gave the GOP 5 seats in the 2004 elections. We all saw what Ken Blackwell accomplished in Ohio for Bush-Cheney, and this year Georgia has redistricted and is now enacting a new "poll tax" in disguise. Many other states are planning the same discrminatory ploy, such as Indiana.

What really saddens me is that the GOP is doing this with no solid evidence of vote fraud -- that is to say individuals knowingly going to the polls who are not entitled to vote. Please let me know of any documented cases of this occuring in the last decade. I know the new photo id laws will prevent legal voters from voting, but I doubt it will prevent a single case of the intentional vote fraud the bills claim to be aimed at. Is it any wonder minorities are so alienated by the Republican Party? Know if You can Identify the Documented Vote Fraud the GOP Complains Of

I really wanted to put everything in bold, but I know that isn't a good idea. :)

17. Melissa, I think his question is really a challenge to the right wingers..
He knows that there has never been a study that documents systematic "voter fraud" of the kind the repugs are claiming in order to justify the ID laws.

Demos issued a report on election fraud, showing that "voter fraud" rarely occurs and that that there is no documentation to say otherwise.

http://www.demos-usa.org/pubs/EDR_-_Securing_the_Vote.pdf

I assume that Conyers knows this and that his question is not an earnest request that we help him get info on voter fraud. It's more like, "If there's any proof of "voter fraud" I'd sure like to see it..."

16. Let me get this straight. Americans revolted against the Bush Cartel...
...and threw them out of our White House, and destroyed the cabal of Bush "pod people" in Congress, by giving the Democrats a blowout success in new voter registration in 2004 (Dems 57%, Reps 38%), and by the extraordinary cooperation of grass roots groups and the Democratic Party in "get out the vote" efforts, with all opinion polls showing consistent and unprecedented disapproval of Bush, with recent polls showing huge disapproval of all major Bush policies, foreign and domestic, in the 60% to 70% range, and with the exit polls on election day showing a Kerry win, and followup studies pointing to a Kerry landslide...

...but the Bush Cartel Republicans successfully stole that victory from the people by a combination of secret, proprietary programming code in extremely insecure, hackable electronic voting machines, owned and controlled by major Bush donors, with Republican Tom Delay blockading a paper trail for those machines in Congress, thus making one third of the country's vote unrecountable and unauditable, with touchscreen voting machines controlled by Bush donors changing Kerry votes to Bush votes all day long, with machine malfunctions and anomalous numbers showing up all over the map on election day, all favoring Bush against astronomical odds, with a mysterious "red shift" toward Bush in the official tally vs. the exit polls, in certain battleground states that Bush needed to win, with a group of 9 Ph.D.'s in statistics later calculating odds of ten million to one against such a shift, and with the TV news monopolies hiding those exit poll numbers from the American people ("adjusting" them to fit the official tally)...

and by...

...massive violations of the Voting Rights Act in Ohio, Florida and other states, with Republican election officials shorting black, poor and Democratic areas on voting machines and precincts, inventing ridiculous, last minute rules for voter registration, and unfairly purging tens of thousands of black voters from the voting rolls, and with many Kerry voters standing in line for up to 10 hours in the rain to vote, in the hope that their perseverance would help change things, with Republican election officials creating a phony "terrorist alert" late on election day in order to exclude public monitors from the vote count in a critical area of the battleground state of Ohio, and with Republican election officials afterward blockading recounts of the Ohio vote...

...in short, the Bush Cartel Republicans succeeded in stopping this voter revolt by every devious means they could think up in their greedy, powermongering, mass murdering, torturing, lawless, ugly little hearts, and...

therefore...

what we really need now is a voter ID law that will discourage poor and minority voters?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...!!!!!!!!!

18. Every "voter fraud" allegation I've seen involved Republicans.
That college kid in WI/IN comes to mind. (He was let off.)

OK, I may be unaware of Dem Voter fraud, but you get the .jpg.

I think the "Voter ID" division of the Baker-Hearne commission said that some of the abuse came from people with two homes in two states.

I wonder if folk owning two homes look as if they "belong in (each of) the neighborhood(s)". :sarcasm:
