Read Gore Vidal on the stolen elections and Dem complicity:
Ohio was stolen. The Republican Congress will never have a hearing on it. But I think attempts are being made to publish the details of what was done there, and elsewhere too in America.

In other words, I put the case that Bush was never elected--not in 2000, and not in 2004. This is a new game in the world. Through the magic of electronic voting, particularly through Mr. Diebold and friends, you can take a non-president and make him president. But how to keep the people, including the opposition who should know better, so silent, this introduces us to a vast landscape of corruption which I dare not enter.

Too damned important to leave in GD or some other place, unseen by the real zealots.

2. "But how to keep the people, including the opposition who should know...
...better, so silent, this introduces us to a vast landscape of corruption which I dare not enter." --Gore Vidal

Well, I'm not so chary as Vidal. I think the collusion and corruption among Democratic leaders and office holders--whether it's belief in Mideast war to surround Israel with US military protection, or keep the oil barons happy and/or to keep our economy chugging along right off the cliff of no oil (soon), or conferences on electronic voting in the French Riviera compliments of Diebold, or just general military-industrial porkbarrel corruption--has to be faced.

The puzzle of the 2004 election is not that the Bush Cartel would steal (I mean, come on...), but that the Democrats would say nothing...NOTHING!...about the egregiously fraudulent election SYSTEM that Diebold and ES&S had put into place, and the obviously fraudulent result.

As always, Vidal has a laserlike assessment. We have a problem with the Democratic leaders that is in some ways worse than the problem we have with the BushCons. At least we can see the BushCons.

4. "collusion and corruption"
In other words, they made a deal. I wondered why Kerry rolled-over so quickly after the election until I read a post here that said he probably made a deal. Politicians are always dealing.

5. Vidal is always a sort of desperate joy to read
But a joy nonetheless. DUers might also be interested in several post-election pieces in the site below which chime in with Vidal's views.

http://www.logosjournal.com/issue_4.1/main.htm

For a tidbit from "Tin Foil Hats, the MSM and Election Mischief"

"Given the utmost need for a trustworthy voting system it was very odd to watch a suddenly fastidious press, guardians of the public trust, do everything they could to tamp down percolating ?mis-election? reports ? dismissing them with a royal wave of the hand as sour grapes or batty conspiracy theorizing.<3> In upper media circles it is axiomatic that there are no such things as conspiracies. . . One wonders whether our intrepid media today would have stirred in 1972 if, say, some naïf noticed that a special White House unit was targeting domestic foes. Maybe if G. Gordon Liddy crossed his heart and promised to confess first? . . . ."

9. "The macho naïveté that many leftists have displayed"
The macho naïveté that many leftists have displayed about ‘getting over it” is exceedingly strange. If the evidence pans out, and only investigations can ever find if it will, then the implication is that, uncorrected, there would be no possibility of defeating Republicans ever again. One supposes leftover immiserationists (“the worse things get, the better”) welcome this plight but they’re woefully misled if they imagine they and their constituency will suffer less than the so-called “Red Staters.” in the relentlessly ugly future that Bush yahoos have in store. What is the point of crafting incisive manifestos if it is done on the basis of misinformation and rigged realities? Would the distraction of ‘moral values” rubbish have arisen otherwise?

--snip

Did tens of millions of ordinary Americans stand in line, often for many hours, to vote for an ultra-right winger who has blithely bungled everything he has touched? Perhaps the likely story Republican strategist Karl Rove spread about a vast turnout of rightwing Christians - the American Taliban - is accurate but the numbers so far don't necessarily support it. What is clear is that the first priority is electoral reform to avert a recurrence, or even a suspicion of recurrence, of this election. One can strategize from here to doomsday and it won’t matter one iota if the voting system is rigged. What would advice be today if Kerry were President with a 51-48% victory, as exit polls seemed to predict? Perhaps not so different. Kerry is no savior, a near majority who voted for Bush remain a huge concern, and the MSM stays overwhelmingly rightwing. Yet the stampede, at least, into a lot of little Armageddons, or one great abyss (see Bronner’s grim and insightful accompanying piece), would have been interrupted. No small grace.

Thanks for this article, darknight, and welcome to DU.

11. Making a nonstop racket is just what is needed
to embolden more 'mainstream' critics. At least some media-visible writers like Vidal, Lewis Lapham at Harpers, and even Christopher Hitchens, who still has his lucid moments, are raising the issue of election fraud.
